... and my point was that the choices around here are odd ... not bad, just different to the rest of the audio community.
If I remember correctly, you're in Australia, where Rode mics hail from. Kind of makes sense that you would see more Rode mics there. On this board, I see pretty much two camps. Those that spend lots of cash for mics and those that don't/can't. I think part of the reason mic choices here might be different is because of how mics are used. Only a few of us get to mic things close up in live performances, so buying mics designed for recording up close don't always work out so well. Also, there are now just a ton of both cheap (in both senses of the word) mics, as well as inexpensive mics from China that weren't around a few years ago. I suspect that has a lot to do with the state of things as well.
I own one Rode mic (the NTG-1), which I use in situations where I need a spare gun, or where I think something might happen to the mic and I don't want to put a Neumann or Sennheiser shotgun out there. The Rode is inexpensive and expendable, yet does a pretty damn good job and I don't hesitate recommending it to those starting out, or to those who need a spare mic. However, it's not an everyday go to mic for films/video simply because there are many other mics that simply out perform it in a lot of situations.
In general however, the Rode mics seem to be very well built and you do seem to get a great deal of bang for your money.
