Should I sell my Etirol R-09 to get the Olympus LS-10?
« on: March 07, 2008, 02:03:00 PM »
I wish I saw this site before I bought by Etirol R-09 on ebay, but reading all the problems with the poor build quality on the R-09 (and I have to say I was just shocked at how cheaply this thing was built when I first took it out of the box), especially with the line-in/mic-in jack problems I've been reading about.  Anyone recommend selling it and getting the Olympus LS-10 instead?  Sounds like it is a pretty solid device.  Thanks for any suggestions.

People say the Zoom has bad build quality too which has kept me from getting it. How about that Marantz recorder?

In my opinion, you should hold on to the R09 for a bit.  The Edirol has many adherents here; most people really like them, they sound good, and they have been comprehensively field tested.  And that jack issue is pretty easy to fix.  I haven't seen much about how the Olympus sounds, especially with external mics, although the few things I have read say that the layout/build is nice.  If I were you, I'd wait to see how the reviews are on the Olympus.  You can always sell the R09 in the Yard Sale.  Also some shops will let you return a recorder within a trial window, so maybe you could do that and compare them.

I am sure some R09 owners will chime in. :)

There is a thread on the Marantz here:  http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,91816.0.html.  I have one and really like it so far.

EDIT:  I also have the H2, and I think it is pretty cool for what it is, but I would definitely prefer either the Marantz or the R09 over it.

Love the R-09. Keep it.  The only negatives being the input issue (haven't had any problem yet) and no digi-in.  It's held in fairly high regard here on the board.  If you are going to use the internal mics, Chris Church has a spiffy new mod for that.

I had the edirol and never liked the "feel" of it and bought the pmd620 and it really seems solid as well as a little more compact and according to some of the tests the pre is in line with those hi-md recorders and you could run mic in at loud show with no bb which would be great for super "not so open mode", that is if your mics would take the high spl like the hlsc's or the at853's(4.7 mod)

One thing I wanted people to know if your going to be using mics directly into the r-09 use a 2.4k resistor in place of the 4.7k that way you get very good performance out of your mics plugged directly into the r-09 But doing this degrades the performance when your using a battery box or one of my preamps. So if you plan to never use a battery box or a preamp then use a 2.4k resistor. I love my r-09 What I find is the performance of this recorder sucks unless you run it pretty hot.. I like to run mine around -6 as much as possible so there is a bit of headroom. I just find the built in converters start to open up when they are pushed harder. When your at -12 there is no balls to the sound.

Keep your R-09 I dont think there has been enough people running the LS yet to make a real educated decision. I would hold on for a while..

Absolutely not!  Keep the R09.  The LS-10 is way noiser than the R09 from the samples I've heard.

Thanks for all the advice.  Still, as an impulsive kind of guy, I just went ahead and ordered the LS-10 primarily because the build quality on the R-09 is so suspect.  I'll compare them for a little while though, and hopefully be able to sell one of them for not a huge loss.  ^-^

I would not call the build quality suspect. I have opened the r-09 and alot of recorders. I find the build quality quite good. One thing is for sure epoxy must be placed on ether side of the jack to reinforce the jack. But after that they it is quite reliable. I think that the LS is going to be a good recorder but the internal preamp might not be as good as the r09.

I guess we will have to wait and see.

Thanks for the input.  I think I'll be keeping the R-09 for a bit on second thought (primarily since the LS-10 can't do seemless file splitting).  Would you suggest opening it up (I bought it off ebay anyway so no warranty) and putting some epoxy in as a protective measure?
