Better wind reduction: Schoeps B5D vs Shure A81s
« on: August 02, 2009, 11:42:12 AM »
Heading to the Gorge soon and am trying to decide which to take. I would think the Shures would cut wind better, but don't know for sure and can't find specs on either.

Go with the Shure's.... they're *almost* Red Rocks Proof.
Yes, but what do you HEAR?

The shures worked fine at Red Rocks for me. I think they are supposed to help with winds up to 20mph? Any idea how fast a wind the Schoeps B5Ds will handle?

FWIW the B5D is this one with the plastic cage and the denser foam:

EDIT: I should also point out that I'd rather take the schoeps because they are much smaller and I'm trying not to check any bags and space is already tight.

I have both, the B5D's are good and for the purists they effect the polar pattern of the mic less as there is the air gap around the mic and the B5Ds are pretty good in light winds, the A81WS screens will hold up in higher winds however and dont effect the sound or the pattern much as far as I can tell. I am about to order some windcutters for my Shures for those really wild days.. I record for film too so sometimes I need get useable sound even if its hurricane force.

I have been using the Schoeps W5D windscreens and they work extremely well. I have a pair of the DPA UA0896's and was rather disappointed with them - I could really hear strong gusts. I have not yet tried the Shure's or 'dead rats' because the W5D's work so well. They are rather expensive at $102 each but I have used them in strong winds (the stand was waving around) and the wind noise (and the effect on the mic's sound) was negligible. I am surprised (maybe the cost) that I do not see more of these in use out in the filed. Very highly recommended. I wouldn't use anything else.
