stealth recording gear options
« on: April 10, 2008, 11:32:00 AM »
been roaming these boards for a few years but never really posted. i've been doing some research the past few days on upgrading my stealth recording.

years ago (around 99/00) i started out recording cassette shows just for myself and got not entirely horrible results. then i upgraded to DAT in 02 maybe? but i sold that a year ago because i phased out audio and started doing video. can't stand that though.

my budget is $300, but i'd like to buy new binaural mics as i don't have any anymore. so i'd say for the recorder, $220 would be my ideal budget. this would be used for stealth almost always, with the occasional soundboard patch for local shows. i'm going to be using this in smaller venues (1000 capacity or smaller).

on my radar at this point is the r01, r09, h2, archos gmini, mt I or II - but there seems to be a lot of complaints about these two. i've thought about minidisc, but i have a mac, and the only mac friendly ones are about $300 starting. if anyone has a minidisc solution, i'm very open to that on count of how cheap they run.

i'm open to any advice anyone may have. good internal mics are always a plus as well, but not needed. i'd prefer plugin power, unless anyone knows of a good preamp+battery pack that's cheap and efficient.

thanks in advance.

There are at least 5 brand new iriver h120 available on ebay right now, well within your budget :)

(rockbox on them highly recommended ;) )

i have an r-01 i dont use because i have a r-09.  But i can sell the r-01?  it has Oade upgrade circuits with increased 6 db gain.  I loved it but i have now been going to the
r-09.  I thought i would use both someday but it has not happen.  If i were you i would get the r-09 but again lmk about the r-01.

how much would you sell the r1 for? i'm not sure how much they go for used because i don't see them on ebay often.

and petur - is the iriver mac friendly? i read the iriver faq earlier and it only mentioned PC hookups and windows everywhere.
