« on: May 08, 2008, 10:39:01 PM »
still new/eager to this, but
anyone have any recommendations for a versatile
mic/gear setup that would work well with the R09HR?

The internal mics might work well. They're already there and thus no extra weight.
You did not explain what you'd like to record or how. This makes it hard to suggest the right stuff.

Sennheiser has the MKH 8000's but these might be too expensive, bulky, etc.
You could try the tiny DPA's.

Depending on what you need and can afford.

They're mentioned enough on this board. Just have a look.

IMHO, internal mics are never worth it, spend the money and make a quality recording with a real pre and higher end mics

Depends on what you want to record. You already assume things. I try not to.
Maybe stuff is meant for unamplified music? Stealth? Or the ordinairy mid-sized arena with a rock show?

well, i figure im not really attending major arenas, though i will be seeing modest mouse again and this time id like to get some decent live recordings, but for the most part i will be recording most of everything, things around me, music i hear people making that i know id like to preserve, conversations around me, street performers. really the possibilites and realms of recording are endless, id really just prefer a mic compatible with the R09HR, from what ive researched im thinking more towards binaural cardioid. i dont mind spending something, but im really looking for affordable. like in the 100-150 range, and i really need some insight on the aspects of mic power, gain,  &adc, ie; whats compatible and what i actually need.

hopefully this is a bit more specific.
i cant even explain how eager i am to get started!

I don't have experience with them yet, as I'm still in the process of purchasing an Edirol & mics, BUT I have downloaded many many shows recorded with the Edirol & Church-Audio's CA-11 mics in a variety of situations & have been very pleased with the results. They are also in your price range, although you'll have to spend more if you want a preamp as well.
Recording: CA-14 > CA-9100 > R09HR
Playback: 70's solid state thrift scores
Riding: Vespa LX-150, Firestone Speed Cruiser II, Burley Runabout

You can buy an extension cable at your local Radio Shack.  For mic/lighting stand adapters, I suggest going with B&H photo.  They'll have any adapter that you'll need.  I'm assuming that you've got the hand-held pistol grip for the CS-15, and I would guess that it's got a 5/8" female mount.  If that's the case, I'd suggest purchasing these two adapters:

I actually bought the pole and mic from them. I guess I should have known to get these. This is the pole...Do I need both? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/89688-REG/General_Brand_LS_10AB_10_AC_Light_Stand_.html

You could buy some Church Audio CA-11's (about $120) and plug 'em directly into your R-09HR when recording concerts, but for conversations and street performers and things like that the R-09HR's internal mics would probably be just fine.  I've got a regular R-09 and its internal mics are much better than I expected them to be.  Here's a recording that I made with 'em:

If you're not into rockabilly music, I suggest listening to track #'s 8 or 13.

Yep, you'll need both (I had to make two separate purchases too, so you're not alone in that screw-up).  Your mic stand has a 1/4-20 mount (I think that all of 'em do) so you'll need the 1/4-20 to 3/8" adapter, then you'll need the 3/8" to 5'8" adapter to fit the pistol grip (I'm guessing).  That's what I do with my mic stand and T-bar:

And since you'll already be making a purchase from B&H, I suggest that you buy a Windtech "C" clamp as well.  It'll be one of the most useful taping accessories that you'll ever purchase:
