I'm looking to stand it on top of the soundboard area.
i've done this before, but there are a few things you need before assuming that this will work:
1. a FOH engineer who is OK with you encroaching upon his space in this manner (most FOH guys freak out if you come within 10 meters of the SBD with the intent of placing any type of gear in his 'zone')
2. a stand that has the smallest footprint as possible (again...even the most accommodating FOH guys are going to be extremely hesitant to allow you to place anything on top of their gear)
3. the ability to assure the FOH guy that you won't be in his face all night
i use a combination of a kick-drum stand and a standard vocalist's mic stand.
the vertical bar on each of these stands unscrews, and the threading is the same on each - so they're interchangeable. i take the longer vertical bar (from the vocalist's stand) and screw it into the base of the kick-drum stand. if you're placing this on top of a rack that is, say, 3 or 4 feet high, this will give you plenty of vertical height for your mics.
this is also a nice option to have available if you record taper-friendly bands in seated theaters, where a conventional tripod stand's wide footprint would normally encroach onto your neighbors' space. you won't get the vertical clearance that you normally would with a conventional tripod, but in a calmer theater environment (especially with seated patrons) this isn't as necessary.
note: i want a triple word score for using the word 'encroach' twice. mark it, dude.
