Small stand options...??
« on: May 20, 2008, 06:20:32 PM »
I did a search for 'mic stands' and it threw up 200 pages lol. I read the first 10 but couldn't find the info I would like.

So I apologize if its a repeat topic.

I'm looking for a small stand to put my AT933's and/or CA-11's onto to open tape. This is just until I can afford a full-on open mic set-up.

Looking for cheap as possible but sturdy enough so it don't topple over. Also, where would I get the bar/s from? Looking for at least 6 inches seperation.

I'm in the UK btw.

Thanks,
Simon.

This is what I've found so far:

http://www.djmmusic.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=DST60TL&eq=&Tp=

Maximum height is 6.7 inches which sounds ideal for me. I'm looking to stand it on top of the soundboard area. Obviously it doesn't want to be too high to obstruct the soundman's view or anything.

Only problem, is how the hell to get the mics onto it...

Are you sure this is an option? I never see that.
Plus you will need more than 6.7 inches in any open taping situation.
First, I would say, if you are going to open tape get a lightstand.
You can get a wide variety on ebay for cheap $$.
Search lightstands.

I thought it would work. Most small venues I've been to have like a wall around the soundboard (so they look kind of boxed in). I've seen cameras/mics set up on stands before and they sit on the edge to the side of the mixing desk. I guess not all venues are like this but all the ones I've been to have had some sort of area you *could* mount a stand onto.

I will search lightstands, thanks for your info. Appreciated.

I'm looking to stand it on top of the soundboard area.

i've done this before, but there are a few things you need before assuming that this will work:

1. a FOH engineer who is OK with you encroaching upon his space in this manner (most FOH guys freak out if you come within 10 meters of the SBD with the intent of placing any type of gear in his 'zone')

2. a stand that has the smallest footprint as possible (again...even the most accommodating FOH guys are going to be extremely hesitant to allow you to place anything on top of their gear)

3. the ability to assure the FOH guy that you won't be in his face all night

i use a combination of a kick-drum stand and a standard vocalist's mic stand.

the vertical bar on each of these stands unscrews, and the threading is the same on each - so they're interchangeable. i take the longer vertical bar (from the vocalist's stand) and screw it into the base of the kick-drum stand. if you're placing this on top of a rack that is, say, 3 or 4 feet high, this will give you plenty of vertical height for your mics.

this is also a nice option to have available if you record taper-friendly bands in seated theaters, where a conventional tripod stand's wide footprint would normally encroach onto your neighbors' space. you won't get the vertical clearance that you normally would with a conventional tripod, but in a calmer theater environment (especially with seated patrons) this isn't as necessary.

note: i want a triple word score for using the word 'encroach' twice. mark it, dude.
you'll love it

QFT
This is what I was getting at.
This probably won't be a constant option I'm guessing.

Anywho, you'll need more than one open rig stand.
Right now I have two.
One for onstage/stage lip 2-4' which I made out of a practice drum pad stand,
and my other is one that goes to 11', but has a big footprint.
My next will have a smaller footprint and fit in about the 6-7' range.

On mounting your mics, there was a few homemade pics on here.
I'll see If I can dig them up.

EDIT:
Here is the thread with pics on how to put them on a stand.
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,100294.0.html

It looks like he just put a low pro shock mount on the top of his stand and clipped them
to it.
That's not really xy.

I just picked up one of these about a month ago... its awesome...

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-GNA-3

I haven't invested in a full stand yet, I use a small camera tripod set on chairs or tables.  Anyway, you slip your mics into the lil windscreen/capsule things, and then setup your configuration.  Isn't quite as easy as a t-bar to get right, but with the mic setup diagram, it takes about 2 seconds; but is alot more customizable.  from split 24" -> XY, i've played with all of them at home, but have run mostly DIN so far...

Here are a few pics of a little mic stand I made myself. Just a bit of aluminium angle, a short piece of aluminium rod and a weighted base.
