Topic: Looking for opinions on tracking.

Hey All.... Just thought I would get your .02. 

I've always tracked my shows as follows:
24bit:
BandDateS?T??
16bit:
BandDateD?T??

Well I've not listened to music from a CD in at least a year or two at this point.  Everything is either streamed through the PC to my stereo or played back on a portable player. 

For my own use I have no need to keep splitting things up based on CDs.  I've started using the same convention for 16bit as 24bit. 

What do you all think about getting rid of the CD split tracking.  I'm guessing it will screw up a few people but most can cope.  I'd also lose fades for the people that listen on CD.

I know there is at least one taper here (Sebastian) who puts in optional "fade" tracks in his recordings. For example: http://www.archive.org/details/tsp2008-02-21.mbho.flac16
even though this fileset has disc divisions, you get the idea. That way you can get both a seamless listening experience as well as fades for CD.

I just use set and track.

When I burn discs I like to keep them roughly even, and not cram the first and leave 20 min on the 2nd, so most people would disregard my disc tracking anyway.

Plus it would add another step to my work flow from 24/96 to name it by cd.

I used to do d+t but now I rarely burn discs since I use a MT and cassette adapter for the car.  Discs I burn for other people so they don't see the labels anyway.

I feel you Dana. I still track according to disc for my 16-Bit flacs, but I also either:

1. Stream or listen w/ fb2k on my PC OR
2. Listen w/ my Zune in the car/at work

so I have been thinking of doing away w/ disc numbers as well, and doing it set+track like I do w/ my 24-Bit stuff. It really doesnt matter either way, since the stuff on my Zune is d/l'd from the LMA(99% of my recordings) and are already tagged, so my Zune doesnt show disc numbers anyway. And I include the track title at the end of every song/track like this anyway:

16-Bit FLACS
moe2008-06-06.ka500.603a.722.d1.t01_Set_Intro
moe2008-06-06.ka500.603a.722.d1.t02_The_Road

24-Bit FLACS

etc so I agree w/ what others have posted. BUT, I do like how easily I can identify my 16Bit vs. my 24Bit recordings thru fb2k w/ the disc number vs. the set number tho, so maybe I'll continue to label the way I have the last 5-6 years. I just think its getting pointl;ess to list disc number anymore, with IPods and Zunes and all of the mp3 players out there. As long as the tracks are tagged w/ eitehr LMA or manually by yourself, I think its a moot point anyway

On stuff I've given out, I never did fades, so people could shuffle stuff or re-assemble it later with proper EAC (if cdda burned) if they so chose. Plus, it was one less step I had to do. 

I think if you folks do start doing your 16bit stuff in sets over discs, that it might be nice if you list a possible tracking order in the text file, that way folks still could track it if they want to.

I don't separate into discs any more.  I just set it into sets (if more than one), or as just the 1 set show.  Don't even usually do fades at the beginning & end, just take advantage of the "natural fade."  I'm sure people can figure out how they'd like to track it into discs if that's how they want to have it.

I only put fades at the start and the end of shows. I don't run 24 bit yet so i can't say about that, yet.

im sure folks with the know-how to d/l flacs can handle breaking a show up into discs tho thats my thinking anymore anyway. and ALOT of folks listen thru mp3 players(like myself and my Zune, which I LOVE) so discs are pretty rare compared to just a few years ago. I still burn the occasional disc for my friends, but only 1 or 2 of them are too lazy to d/l and burn them for themselves Damn lazy friends. with the advent of the LMA and shit, I am getting pretty grumpy about even doing that anymore, plus I have NO NEED to buy CD-R's anymore I dont mind for my 1 friend who doesnt have the internet, but my best friend in the world has WiFi and can d/l from ANYWHERE on the planet basically, and is too lazy to do it himself. BUT, I showed him how to do it himself last weekso thats a HUGE STEP for him Im just refusing to do them for him anymore. Its the ONLY way he'll learn himself

I'm of the set and track opinion.  I sometimes do fades at the beginning and end of a set but not always, never on a CD split.  Like most have mentioned.  I rarely burn to DC except for in the car and even then I'm often listening to a high quality VBR MP3 on my iPod.  I maintain a completely separate directory with every show as MP3.  The FLACs get used at home on the good playback system, for burning CDs for non FLAC savvy friends.  the MP3 directory synchs with the iPod and I listen to them when at my work desk.
