Went to record a Mofro  and by the time I got there they were set up and soundcheck was over.  ALL the channels on the board were being used to completely have both bands set up and ready to go.  (usually I run my stage mics back through the house snake)  OK no problem. I have 100+' of xlr pair. Also there was nowhere to take a signal off the board... (crap)  I thought about it and miced one of the pa stacks very close and direct. (5' in front.. 8 foot off the floor.. dfc) I mixed this with my stage source... really can't tell it's not a matrix with a sbd. Talked to James (easyjim) and he has used this method with good results. Something to think about.

Bob Cogswell in the SF Bay Area also does this a lot, and has lots of sources of this type up on the LMA.  As a technique, it can work really well in poor sounding rooms and/or when you cannot get SBD access.

i've run directly in front of the stacks a few times (mics split/directly in front of each stack) with great results...
