Mac and FLAC?
« on: October 15, 2008, 08:37:23 AM »
I don't have a Mac, so why would I know? Just wondering, if you're using Mac OS X, is there a problem downloading FLAC files? Had someone inquire and I'd like to try to help them out as much as I can, but I don't know squat about Mac (that I know anything about PC's either).

never had  a problem with mine and I've been running OSX for the last 6 years
I use Toast Titanium for my burning software which will handle almost ANYTHING
SHN files have to be converted to WAV before burning, but xACT will handle that
I use Amadeus Pro (not free) for my editing software... there are are other programs as well
but you can use Audacity also, which is free and handles MOST basic editing needs

I use. http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Audio/MacFLAC.shtml

Also, VLC media player is great (i think) and plays FLAC along with all sorts of other media. I've been leaning on it more than quicktime.

I need to check out the scott bowns xACT. Need something for SHN.

I use, or have used:

xACT - encode/decode FLAC and other formats, fix SBE, tag FLAC, etc.
DVD-Audiofile - create DVD-A discs from FLAC files
Toast 7 - burn 16bit FLAC direct to disc
Play - player for 16bit and 24bit FLAC
Cog - player for 16bit FLAC only

thanks for the VLC link. I'm trying it out now.

ya I love it. works well with DVD's and converts DVDs to computer video formats (mpeg, quicktime..blah blah blah). I think does streaming stuff. Also plays FLV files (flash video). And its free  ;D

Cog - player for 16bit FLAC only

Cog works with 24 bit files, too. It's now my preferred player...

Ah, they must have updated. Last version I used played only static for 24bit FLACs.

The only problem i've ever had is if there are periods used in the names other than .flac, macflac has trouble decoding them, taking the periods out of the file names usually solves that problem.

I'm the one macroint asked the question for. My problem isn't that I can't download, play or convert flacs. It was a problem with the interface of the site where I wanted to download a show he put up. It's at Beatbots: http://www.box.net/shared/21iudt79l8

I tried 3 browsers with no luck -
Safari and Internet Explorer (now unsupported) on a G4 running OSX 10.3.7 and
Firefox on a Macbook running OSX 10.4.11

No links show in the status bar even though the links are alive when the cursor passes over them. No downloads begin when I click them either. Is this site a problem for other Mac users? Any suggestions would be welcome - thanks in advance.

Sorry, I guess I mis-understood your problem. Unfortunately, I can't help you on that (not that I could help any other way).

BTW - VLC works great in Linux as well and was recently ported to the iPhone (beta - no FLAC support - although you have to jailbreak your iphone though :()
