Ca-14 are his "best" card mics.  I have his CA-11 and they sound damn nice.  He makes two preamp.  The 9000 & 9100.  Chris can chime in with the differences.  The 9000 has either 0, +10db, or +30 db of gain and the 9100 has -20 thru +20 db gain.  I am running a 9100 and couldn't be happier.

As for the R-09HR, if you read the threads, it will answer all your questions.  I will hopefully use mine for the first time this weekend.

You made the jump Mako! Nice.

I like my CA-14 > 9100 setup right now.  I run that into an R-09 or D50.
Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

Yeah, i can't get how small this puppy is compared to my trusty JB3.  Menus seems a lot easier, startup time shorter....  Can't wait to use it!!!

I may be in the minority here since I have never read anything negative written here about the UGLY preamp. I'm a huge fan of Chris Church's products, but in my opinion, unless you absolutely need the tiny size of the UGLY, I'd strongly recommend the ST-9100. The ST-9100, while not tiny, is still very small and it is easy to adjust your levels on the fly. With the UGLY this is practically impossible-you need to use a small screwdrive to adjust the gain pots and that must be done individually for each channel. To me, it seems that the ST-9100 is far easier to use unless you know before hand that the concert won't be too loud (such as acoustic) & that you will need the full gain that the UGLY provides. I love my ST-9100. I recently got an UGLY also and probably will wind up not using it much because the ST-9100 is so much easier for me to use.

Any of the Church mics are great. The CA-11 set sounds great (and has interchangeable card/omni caps) and the CA-14 is supposed to be even better (I have one but have not had a chance to use it yet).

AT853's (all caps)/CM-300 Franken Naks (CP-1,2,3)/JBMod Nak 700's (CP-701,702) > Tascam DR-680
Or Sonic Studios DSM-6 > M10
