FR-2LE problem: USB flakey
« on: February 10, 2009, 08:11:37 PM »
I've got a (self modded) FR-2LE.  It has been working great, except recently the USB seems flakey: either the computer fails to recognize device ... just hangs, or it craps out partway through a transfer.

I tried flashing the BIOS again (same version, 1.12, most recent) but the USB is still flakey.

I presume I can use another flash reader, but this is still somewhat worrying...

I always take the card out and plug it into a card reader to run into my computer.  Are you trying to transfer straight out of the recorder with the card inserted?  I did that once and it took an eternity.

I hope that was a typo as the most recent version is 1.20
http://www.fostexinternational.com/docs/pro_support/FR2LE120.zip

I always use an external reader since the only time I tried to transfer with the card in the FR2LE it transferred at USB1.1 speeds, ie about 45 minutes for a two hour show. But that was also before I updated the firmware.

< I just reread that and realized you might have been referring to flashing the bios of your computer rather than the firmware of the LE >

mine has always been a pita using it as a transfer box
like you said it will hang (if trying to transfer more then 1 file at a time) then you can't get it to exit without unplugging it and of course you then get the error message saying it wasn't ejected right
even then sometimes i have to remove the power to the box in order for it to reset
i am not 100% sure what firmware i have though
i try to use my mt for transfers as its faster and easier

Go to this page
http://www.fostexinternational.com/docs/pro_support/pro_soft_updates.shtml
scroll down to the FR2LE section and look for the installation notes, read them and follow the instructions but basically you download the update, unzip it, transfer it to a cf card and then go through the LE's menus. One option is update, select yes or proceed or however it's worded, once the LE has transferred the firmware from the card I think you have to restart the LE but don't recall exactly. It's been quite a  while since I've done it. Detailed instructions are in the installation notes. I recommend reading the manuals supplement and also keep in mind, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

so it looks like that the only difference from v1.10 and v1.20 is:
Quote
You can now format a disk with "mono" MP3 mode.
You can set the "Track Mode" item in the Format menu item of the Disk menu to "STEREO"
or "MONO" when you select the FS/BIT Mode to MP3.

and
Quote
2) The sample word of recording time which is derived from the internal RTC (realtime clock)
is now recorded as the time reference of a BWF file.
Therefore, if you record a BWF file using the FR-2LE and play it back by a system which can display
the BWF time, you can see the time information (24H RUN) of the file.

are there any other improvements is it more stable?

also has any one used the

BWF Manager' is a software utility application that enables the user to analyze a selected BWF(Broadcast Wave Format) poly format file and create individual BWF mono files for each track of the poly format file.

this could be helpful if I understand it correctly;' One would be able to seperate the stereo interleaved  BWF file into 2 mono files- which could aid in editing and coping and pasting one channel (either L or R) to the other.

thanks
i played aroudn with my menu and saw the update option
i think for what it adds i will stick to 1.1 since i usually don't transfer via fr2le anyway and mono recording doesn;t do anything for me
