Topic: SD MixPre -> ?

Hi All,

This is my first post here, great webspace you all seem to occupy here. Very informative.
Just so everyone knows I have searched the forum and read many opinions, but am still curious about a few things.

Right now I have a SD MixPre and I am looking to purchase a good recorder to go with it. iI am having a hell of a time finding the perfect recorder, I would like not to spend a ton on the recorder as well.

I researched getting the Zoom H4 (which I have owned and sold many moons ago). Unfortunately the Zoom's inputs are unbalanced Hi-Z inputs. The output of the MixPre, as many of you know, is not high impedance and it is balanced line level. I would like to NOT need to use converters, line pads, etc...

The same goes for the new H4n.

I have considered getting a Marantz PMD 661 or a Fostex FR2-Le (some researching still needs to be done for this unit, not sure if it offers line-in yet.)

But in a last ditch attempt I am hoping someone could offer a less expensive and smaller(in size)  solution.

I have seen some people on these boards suggest the R09HR with the Mixpre, but I am not quite sure how there are setting it up.

I would love to hear some of the setups (and recommendations) people are using with the mixpre and their recorders.

I have been using a MixPre (and previously the MixPre precursor, the MP-2) for several months now with a R-09HR and Neumann KM184 and more recently with Schoeps MK4/CMC6.  I think I've had some good results with the combo.  Here are some of the better efforts:

I would love to try a 661 but I've been completely satisfied with the MixPre > R-09HR and plan on getting new caps before I get a new pre or recorder.  Hope this helps dude.

Use the mini(1/8 inch) tape out jack on the mixpre into the line in jack of your recorder. Yes the r-09hr
is a very good recorder. That used with your mixpre will make for a fine rig. Good luck.

I have a MixPre that I used with an R09 and now an R09HR, both make superb recordings from the line-out jack on the MixPre. Indeed, probably any of the latest crop of digital recorders will be excellent with a MixPre out front.

I use mine mainly for ambient and foley work, so quiet matters.

Even sub-$200 units like the Zoom H2 and Tascam DR-07 should
give nice recordings via line in.  The advantage of the $300 R-09HR
is that it sounds very good without the MixPre in front of it, too.

Ok, that makes sense. I just looked at the R09HR and saw the line-in jack, I did not originally see this. So that how people are using the R09HR.

The R09HR seems to be popular and well working with the MixPre, I think that is what I will go with or perhaps the H2.

Edit: Looking over prices and such, i think I might go with the H2. I save about ~150 USD and also have a line-in jack. I wonder if there would even be a discernible difference between the R09HR line in vs the H2 line in (maybe a/d converters in one are better?)

It is a real nice setup, minus the fact I can't see a thing on the R09HR in the sunlight (unless it is brightened up).

Other than that I am happy. I actually am thinking of selling my VP88 though. I like it a lot, but I am thinking of a custom M/S setup with MKH416, maybe a MKH30-like or something I can find on craigs.

I've got a new mix-pre also.  I'm not really a concert recorder, but over the weekend I recorded morning birds in a suburban nature area.  AT3032 omni mics >> Mix-pre >> PMD 660 (early model, Oade basic mod, but I think line-in bypasses all Doug's good work).

Worked very nicely for me.

I'm going to sit back and watch the new crop of recorders.  I'd like to move to XLR line-in and use that path from the mix-pre.  I think my next hardware purchase is going to be a set of decent shockmounts.
