Schoeps vs DPA (wide card)
« on: April 06, 2009, 10:14:28 PM »
Has anyone used and compared the 2 brands?

I'm thinking of getting DPA or Schoeps but cannot decide.

It's either MK21H or DPA4027 (both of these brands have a high-frequency emphasis for a slightly "brilliant" sound image).

Getting the MK21H setup (MK21H > KCY 250/5 Ig > VST 62 IUg > XLR cable (specially made)) will cost over $4000, whereas getting a pair of DPA4027 will cost around $3000.

Mics: DPA3552 kit/DPA3521 kit/DPA SMK4081 kit/DPA SMK4060 kit/Schoeps 2X MK21, 2X MK22 and 2X MK4v and 2X Schoeps CCM2S
Mixers/preamps: Sonosax SX-M32/Sonosax SX-M2 LS/Grace Design V3/DPA MMA6000/Millennia HV-32P
Recorders: SD722/PCM-D50/MT2
Playback: Grace m903 - Sennheiser HD650 / Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus 805s

What will you be recording?  In what environments?  Do you plan to spend additional money at a later date on other mic patterns?  What other gear will you use?  And most importantly:  Have you listened to both DPA and Schoeps recordings?  Which have you generally preferred?

They're both top notch mics capable of making superior recordings.  Which to select depends on personal preferences.  Personally, I generally prefer Schoeps.  Of course, others prefer DPA.

I'll be recording mainly classical music....2 reasons why I like to use wide card...I like the omni sound (sound open and not too tight in a quiet recording session).

recording live classical concerts
recording 4 tracks (with another pair of omni)

I already used both omis (CCM2S and DPA4052).

For the Schoeps I like it's cleanness...For the DPA I like how it picks up everything in detail and the sound sort of sparkle more.

I've been doing a lot of 4 track recording:

Using my DPA4052 and DPA4021>SD442>SD722 (for cello and piano)
Using my Schoeps CCM2S and DPA4052>SD442>SD722 (for violin and piano)

So now I want to use a pair of wide card with a pair of omni in a 4 track setting..

Confused if I should get Schoeps or DPA. Schoeps set up is more expensive, about $1000 more than DPAs.

If I'm not happy with the mics after purchasing them would both brand fetch a good price if I want to sell them? I don't know which brand is more demanding in the used market. I tried to get used DPA4027 or MK21H > KCY 250/5 Ig > VST 62 IUg to try out but no one seem to part with them. If I like them I'll keep them but if I'm not too impress with the results I'll sell them.

If I buy/keep the Schoeps setup (MK21H > KCY 250/5 Ig > VST 62 IUg > XLR cable (specially made)) I might buy the MK5s in the future. So that is another benefit of getting the Schoeps setup. But the start up setup is over $1000 more than a pair of DPA4027s.

So really confused what to get.... ???
