Hey there I am working with a band trying to get a decent matrix recorded. I am looking into this: http://www.peavey.com/products/browse.cfm/action/detail/item/115024/PV(R)%206.cfm

Would this be what I am looking for to do a matrix on the spot rather than mixing in post. It is totally open and I would have access to their power. I would be running a set of sound pro's at831's and then a patch from the board. I am looking for my cheapest route (as I am only doing this for fun). Also if this would work would I need to get a set of ground loop isolated rca cables (since i will be using the same power source as the board)?

I am totally new to the whole matrix on the spot deal but would love to be able to get a decent recording for the band. Any help or thoughts toward what would be better would be much appreciated.. I have a guy willing to sell me a Peavey RQ200 for 75 bucks shipped right now as well but for a couple bucks more I can get a new PV6 (Which looks a bit smaller to me).

Thanks so much in advance for any help you can provide.

if you go this route, run your  mics as close to the stage as you can.  it will help with any delay problems
cause we zig and zag between good and bad
stumble and fall on right and wrong

That will do the job...But - get I'd one that has a little better metering features...

You'll want a peak light on each channel (preferably up by the 1st gain trimmer) - these are especially helpful getting the board level right.

I wouldn't worry about any special RCA cables...

Also get one with a separate headphone ouput/drive. (the Peavey has this) - and a set of closed back headphones...they dont really have to be the most kick ass headphones, they just have to block out the room a bit.
I use a Yamaha MG10/2 - same price class...but a few more features. They are discontinued now - but still cheap on ebay.

A few things to consider:

Talk to the band/soundman - find out what is and isnt in the board mix. If its a full mix - you may want to add more ambient room sound, if its a partial vox/bass/kick/ type of mix...you will do better onstage, using your mics to fill in the holes.

Do they use a stage snake? or do they run sound from the stage? If there are a few extra snake channels, you might be able to use them to run the mics on stage.

I've found - the closer I am to the stage - the more even I run the sources...as you move further back, you have to start lowering your room mics just to keep the delay sounding "real" and not ahead of the direct board sound.

Good luck - this is my favorite way to record - especially if you have the luxury to work the same band a lot.

Excellent thanks so much for all the information. I will start looking around and hopefully come up with something in my price range. I appreciate all the info on mic placement and such. It sounds like I may have my work cut out for me haha. I am excited to snag a mixer and try it out! If anyone has any other thoughts on a somewhat cheap mixer please let me know.
