Tascam DR-07 - Newbie help
« on: October 20, 2009, 03:05:01 PM »
Hey all. Been recording with my bro-in-law's Sony D7 for several years. Been going to shows a lot more recently, and started to look into buying an inexpensive recorder, mics and stand.
Was thinking of getting the Tascam DR-07 for starters. Has built-in mics, which I read aren't too bad. So, for starters, I was thinking of getting the DR-07, shock mounts for the DR-07 and a 13' pole (http://www.adorama.com/SALSB13AC.html#). This'll get me what I need to start right away. Then after I find some more funds, looking to get the CA-11s.
I figured for this, so far approx $200 will get me what I need now, then whatever the going rate is for CA-11s.  Sound like a reasonable plan? Obviously is money wasn't an issue, I'd go a different route.

My recordings are usually Ratdog/Dead/The Machine, small bars etc.

Thanks in advance.
Chris

I think the plan sounds good. I just picked a DR-07 up from Sound Professionals for $99.00 on a 1 day sale. They actually sold out, but honored the price. You may want to check with them for any future sales. Prior to that they had a 1 day sale at 149.00. I mention that, because you mention that money is an issue. The more you save, the faster you can move toward external mics. That said, when I've heard recordings of the DR-07 isolated as you mention, those internals sound nice enough to get you going.

I think the dr-07 is a jam up lil' device, worth the cost fo' sho'.  I haven't run the internals yet but hear they are nice.  Enjoy and welcome to the money pit!

Loving mine...  ;D

Can't beat it for the price! The internal mics are nice but defiantly save for the external. I used the internal mics for an acoustic band at an Irish pub one night and got a nice recording. Haven't used them for anything else though...

Saw this in another thread:

The DR-07 is currently on sale for $169.00, both in Canada and the US.

US: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Tascam-DR07-Handheld-Digital-Recorder?sku=580037

I think this is a steal for a great little recorder.

Thank Dogmusic for posting that...

I think SoundProfessionals has it for $139.00 right now ($199 - $60 when you add it to your cart)

I picked one up on the $99 sale just to have another recorder. I did a short sample the other night with the internals and it wasn't too bad.

I'm loaning my CA-11s (cards) out for a while, but they will be in the yard sale eventually. I've made some great recordings with them, but recently upgraded to the CA-14s.
