Replacement Hi-MD player needed
« on: May 27, 2010, 01:25:46 PM »
So last week I discovered that my old Sony MZ-NH900 Hi-MD recorder had taken it upon itself to suffer a total existence failure. It won't play, it won't load discs, ir won't even eject discs without a lot of wrangling with the door mechanism. It is an ex-Hi-MD recorder.

Now, I wouldn't actually care - I switched over to using a Rockboxed iRiver about a year ago, and am loving it - except that I have several years' worth of recordings that I now can't access. (This includes both live music recordings and some interviews I conducted for work.) Many of them I've transferred to computer, but not all.

Any ideas for my cheapest options for something that'll enable me to transfer this stuff? I just checked out the eBay options, and I'm not really thrilled at the idea of shelling out $100+ for a replacement recorder just to retrieve a few old recordings, but I'll do it if I need to.

It is an ex-Hi-MD recorder.

Are you sure it's not just pining for the ATRACs? Sorry.

For what it's worth, even the bottom-of-the-line MZ-NH600D--the downloader, with no mic-in or line-in--will upload Hi-MD recordings. But yeah, you're pretty much at the mercy of eBay. If it's literally just a few hours of recordings, you might also find a kindly TS member to upload them for you, or ask over at the relocated minidisc.org

Thanks - that's good to know about the NH600D, anyway.

I thought about just throwing myself on the mercy of non-broken-MD-owning friends, but I haven't even catalogued what's transferred, what's transferred but via crappy analog connection, and what's still only on MD. And that's not even getting into all the interview discs labeled things like "early 2008."
