Build simple T-Bar
« on: August 07, 2010, 09:17:56 PM »
I know this has been asked before, but has anyone drawn up simple plans for making a REALLY basic T-Bar that would accommodate some Church mics?

Like....$5 @ Home Depot or several Erector set pieces. Something along those lines ;D

I'm looking to go DIN (what I usually strive for) unless you guys suggest a better config for a outdoor shows.

...A year and half into this recording thing and I still don't have a reliable mic mount, geez. In return I'll post pics :D

AS ALWAYS, THANKS!

Been looking at different places for items to make a T-bar for my CA mics as well.  Haven't found anything yet.

It might turn out mildly ghetto but I was thinking, as a simple shockmount, to simply run a few same size rubber bands across. Like 3, and place the mic in the middle. Might work.

And old set of TV Rabbit Ears - extendable to whatever spread you want...  Use some kind of clip for the mics at the ends.  Mount them on a clamp or stand and you're good to go...

Thanks absnj (and everyone else). I'm actually using a ruler right now but it just seemed like that was the crappy way to go. I most def need a shockmount though. I like how that last guy did it with s/m'ing the whole ruler, though that seems like it wouldn't hold side to side and would fall out.

Alright I'm gonna give it a shot. Anyone suggest a better config than DIN for an outdoor venue?

Check out this thread for a low cost option that I've seen used quite a bit.  I've apparently deleted the linked pictures, but I think the text gives enough details that you'll get the point.

I assume you're talking about mine. I still use the same setup. I painted it black and swapped the rubber bands for elastic ponytail holders. I still clip to the ruler. I've been using DIN because I'd have to trim the corners of the ruler for ORTF and haven't gotten around to it. My tapes have been sounding pretty good, so I've been using it everywhere. I've taped in crowded venues, outdoors in the wind, and never had any problems with the ruler moving.

I started out with the ruler threaded directly to the top of the stand. After two shows, I made the shockmount because of all the stand bumps. It has worked very well.

Yep, that's yours alright. Thanks for the great idea! Flight leaves tonight so I gotta finish this baby.

I'm using a wooden ruler and stand bumping, yes threaded straight to the stand tip, has been an issue several times. I also bought some hair ties, the long ones like entire head type that are rubberized....perfect. My erector set pieces are painted black, I have it all planned out. Next is to cut the ruler and assemble it all.

can I ask how long the ruler is on the shorter length? I guess for DIN it should just be 20 cm to the center of the CAPSULES (right?). just wanna get it perfect ya know? :)

I think that is a 7 inch ruler/scale. To get ORTF, I'd need to trim the corners or cut the length.

To mark it, I clipped the mics to the ruler and used a printout of the DIN config to line the mics up. Then I traced around the alligator clips with a pen. Makes for a quick, simple set up.
