Suggestion for synchronization program
« on: August 28, 2010, 08:56:15 AM »
Hi all,

I'm searching for a program that is able to make accurate synchronizing between two sources (2 external HD drives) - I need it to 'remember' the structure and contents of the 'old' one, and to be able to update the corresponding folders with the new contents of the second one, as well as to inform me about structure changes and let me choose what and how to perform the relevant update.

I remember reading about a program that fits my description but I haven't been able to locate that post.

Thanks everyone and have a great day.

Are you thinking of RSync? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rsync . The have it for linux/mac/pc

In reading it seems there are some diff utilities that can report changes.

It might be DeltaCopy. Several posts about it here on TS but the following should give you enough info to see if it is the program you had in mind.

Assuming you're using a Windows based computer. If so, I use Microsoft SyncToy 2.1. It's free. Works well. Pretty easy to set up.

Thanks for your help.

I was actually talking about something like 'Folder CD', however from what I just read about DeltaCopy, sounds like that's what I'm looking for.  Microsoft's tool is quite impressive too.  I guess I'll try both and see which is better for me.
