Thanks for all the feedback.  I'm planning on going 24/48 and recording at moderate levels, and to NOT stress about it, enjoy the show and with any luck I might have something I'll listen to again! 

I'll give a post show review of the maiden voyage with the deck...

What they're saying. you can record some really quiet stuff, amp it up in post and it's not hissy.

That is not correct.  We should at least try and be somewhat correct about general concepts, if not terminology.  The noise floor is no different (unless the device in question has a quirk). The noise floor will increase with added gain in post at both 24 bits, and 16 bits.

24 bits allows you to record at a lower levels without losing resolution.
