Schoeps (MK/CCM) 41V vs 41
« on: November 09, 2010, 10:47:23 AM »
I never considered the 41V when I decided to get 41s because I thought it was like the 4V with the HF boost.  But apparently, the 41V does not have a HF boost but does have 'improved' pickup basically in a 180 degree span (which would seem to be of especial benefit when recording sound bouncing around in a venue... or would it?):

Quote
It excels particularly in the constancy of its polar response throughout the audio spectrum. As a result, sound within 90º on either side of the main axis is picked up with virtually no alteration of frequency response or tone color. This is strongly evident with sound sources that are in motion, but is also of great benefit in obtaining stable, precise stereo imaging for normal music recordings

Does anyone have much experience or comparisons using both the 41s and the 41Vs?  Curious how much different or improved the results would be, and if I should consider unloading my month-old 41s to get 41Vs instead.  Thanks!

I prefer the on-axis caps sound but this just be me - I like 4's over 4v's (esp with the cmc6xt's);  I tended to get more consistent results with the non V's (harder to angle) but I ran backwards with a Kwon DIN bar - you may get around the accuracy of pointing the caps by using a vertical bar as they are easier to angle.

I never ran the 41v's but I did run the 4V's and 4's alot over the years.

i feel anyone running 4v's or 41v's any way but vertical, r not going to get the best results.  some of those din, and ortf bars that i see v's on just look wrong.  ed

standard din bars should work fine (spacing might be off a smidge, but the angle is right), but I think you have to have special V ortf bars made, the angle is wrong if you take a stock mk-non-V bar and spin it around to run off the back.

i dont think the cmc6xt was intended to be used with 4v or 41v caps. pretty sure ive seen that on the schoeps website somewhere.

Don't both the 4V and 41V have a slight high freq. boost?
And I think that the 41's claim to have no coloration off-axis too......  I think.
I might be wrong on both........

I actually PMed Dsatz this exact question a few weeks ago... this was his response to me

"I have only very limited experience with the MK 41 V, but I don't think that you can count on its having the same sonic relationship to the MK 41 as the MK 4 V has to the MK 4; the MK 41 V doesn't have the deliberate high-frequency elevation that was built into the MK 4 V.

I would suggest trying to borrow or rent a pair first in order to find out whether it offers what you're looking (or listening) for or not; it may be that what you like is the little high-frequency boost, and maybe you could get that by EQing the recordings that you make with your existing MK 41 capsules.

ask larry narachi (lnarachi on here i believe). hes the only one i know that uses them in a pa taping application, and has tons of pulls from many different venues. if you want to hear a lot of 41s vs 41vs, there are many string cheese shows where larry ran the 41vs and john hart ran the 41s. though with capsules that directional it can be hard to not be apples to oranges, as pickup angle is more critical, imo. some guys use predefined patterns, others just point hypercards at the stacks, etc

there are many Phish recordings made with the mk41v's.
Some in 2000 from Marc Nutter, many in 2003 from John Crouch, and many in 2009/2010 from Derek Davis.  I'm sure you'll be able to find several mk41 vs mk41v recordings from these Phish shows.

The 41V's are a whole different beast if you ask me. CFox runs the 41V's quite a bit. They sound really nice and shine with the tubes. It would be the only hyper cap I would EVER consider.  :P
