Edirol R-09HR or Zoom H4n with Core Sound mics?
« on: March 11, 2011, 01:32:51 PM »
Hi all,

I have both the Core Sound binaurals and high-end binaurals as well as Sennheiser 421s, and am looking at new recorders (time to finally upgrade from DAT).

Friends have recommended both the Zoom H4n and Edirol R-09HR recorders. Any recommendations about which one sound better with my mics?

Thanks and regards,

John

In that price range I would go with the Sony PCM-M10 ($200) which has better internal pre amps and battery life than either of those.

The R-09HR has a better "HOLD" function because you can keep it from having the levels adjusted while on "HOLD", which with the M10 you cannot.  Otherwise, I prefer the M10.

Zoom machines are, from all I have heard, pieces of garbage and I would avoid the H4N unless you REALLY need the 4-channel functionality.
Mics: Schoeps MK4V, MK41V, MK5, MK22> CMC6, KCY 250/5, KC5, NBob; MBHO MBP603/KA200N, AT 3031, DPA 4061 w/ d:vice, Naiant X-X, AT 853c, shotgun, Nak300
Pres/Power: Aerco MP2, tinybox v2  [KCY], CA-UBB
Decks: Sound Devices MixPre 6, Zoom F8, M10, D50

Exactly what he said......Avoid the Zoom and if you're in the U.S then the M10 is IMO the better choice between the M10 and the R09-HR, here in the U.K the price for a M10 is £300 so it's a little on the expensive side but I digress....

1.PCM - M10
2.R09-HR
3.Tascam DR 100

Funnily enough, I'm in the market for a new recorder (R09 owner).

Saw this UK ad and am wondering what the catch might be, given the usual £280-300 price range. The button lock of the R09HR might sway it though.
