Tascam DR-05 record level control
« on: March 22, 2011, 12:05:47 PM »
The record level control on the Tascam DR-05 is no longer a physical dial like on the old DR-07, but now uses buttons to change a record level read-out in the display.

Does this mean that this control, like on the Zoom H2, is now post-A/D converter, and therefore is only affecting the digital signal?

If so, this seems a step backwards for Tascam. At least the H2 had an analog switch pre-A/D.

I do not know that in H2, but in the DR-07 is installed CS42l51. That he is responsible for the recording level (potentiometer only sets the value of a control logic).
I suspect that in the DR-05 is installed the same CODEC. In any case, the FR-2LE and many other recorders contain exactly this CODEC.

Excuse me for my English.

So when I adjust the record level on the DR-05, is it being affected before or after the analog to digital converter?

I had a look at this data sheet for the CODEC CS42l51.

www.cirrus.com/en/pubs/proDatasheet/CS42L51_F1.pdf

I don't know enough about this to fully understand it, but it does mention Analog Gain Controls, as well as Digital Volume Control. Does that mean that there is analog attenuation of the input before the Digital converter on the DR-05?

Anyone clear this up? I'd really appreciate it.

Before codec put something does not make sense. In the codec is installed "Analog Programmable Gain Amplifier" before the ADC. Just in cs42l51 can bypass all the amplifiers.
