Mounting CSBs
« on: March 18, 2011, 01:43:24 PM »
I wondered how folks using these mics tend to mount them?

I realised they're designed as binaural mics but wondered about mounting them X-Y?
Is anyone using them on mounts? (other than hats, specs and jacket collars of course...)

If they're designed as binaural mics they'll be omnidirectional, so your best bet is an A-B spaced pair.  Chris Watson (wildlife specialist) uses omni lavelier mics mounted on a wire coathanger quite a lot, there's a sketched diagram here:

XY is a coincident stereo recording technique that involves two directional micrphones, usually cardioid. CSBs are omnidirectional.

Your best option to increase stereo imaging when recording with the mics mounted is to use a baffle. Read up on jecklin disks and you should get some good ideas!

Oop! I completely forgot I'd started this thread...

Thanks for the answers and the links. I actually visited the Chris Watson installation at Kew Gardens. He's an interesting guy.
