5/8" (on top) rapid adapter?
« on: April 28, 2011, 11:22:50 AM »
It appears from my search at B&H that the following type of rapid adapter does not exist, but I would be surprised if that is the case.

This is the normal one we see, which you can stick atop any size stand and have a nice 3/8" on top:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546490-REG/Manfrotto_014_38_014_38_Rapid_Adapter.html

I have a very specific application for which I'd like to insert one of these on an extension arm horizontally and then connect up a vert bar.  My vert bar is 5/8" threaded.

I suppose I can just put an adapter in the vert bar, but I'm a little surprised there isn't a rapid adapter that gives you 5/8".  It just seems like a more convenient solution than the typical screw-on adapters, which have a habit of getting stuck.

Yeah, I haven't seen/found a rapid adapter with a 5/8" thread on top.  Using a 3/8" > 5/8" adapter on top of the rapid adapter has the advantage of giving you flexibility in being able to connect via 3/8" later on if you want with the same rapid adapter.  If you use a 3/8" > 5/8" adapter that has a 'slot' type groove in the thread, you can easily use a small coin (a dime works well) to easily unscrew it even if it's in there pretty tightly.  And some of those 3/8" > 5/8" adapters are fairly short and fit completely inside the threaded part so it doesn't add any additional length.

^^ OK, thanks.  Yeah, I know they aren't that hard to get off... just another bit of unscrewing I suppose.  Thanks!

^^ Yeah, I have one of those.  In this exact case it doesn't work with the extension arm I'm using, because the way I run the arm, the threaded bit can't point upward.  I have another arm that can do it that way, but this one is bigger/heavier/better/longer, but doesn't have that feature...
