Hey now,
So, I ran my new Mytek 192 a >d this weekend for the first time, and it sounds ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.....when I was soliciting opinions, I got QUITE A FEW replies telling me it would be a waste of money, and that my HD-P2 was every bit as solid. I even had one guy who is pretty damn well known around here go as far as to tell me it would be a waste of my money and would be an inaudible addition to the rig. Well, I do appreciate and respect all those opinions, however, they were all FLAT WRONG ;-) The sonic difference the 192 made was astounding. The overall clarity and warmth that the 192 added to the recording was more than I could have hoped for. For the record, I do have a very nice playback system; however, I have been using the same playback setup almost as long as I've been making recordings, give or take 5 years, and am therefore VERY familiar with the sound of my stereo. Even in my car, listening to a rendered 320 MP3 version of the recording, one can hear a big difference (and it's not like I was using crap to record through previously).....I'm not sure how anyone can miss the difference, or why anyone would recommend not buying one if I had the funds to spend.
ANYHOW, the real reason of my post is this:
When I power the 192 using a standard 5400 mAh 9V portable DVD battery, the unit appears to function, EVEN WHEN POWERED OFF. As soon as the DVD battery is plugged in, the low battery light begins to blink (although it blinks low battery when powered on as well....the unit has a range of something like 8.4 > 12 volts....figures aren't exact because the unit isn't in front of me). The unit passes signal when powered off, and the LED's light up that correspond to the setting I have set when it is on (ie sample rate, pot, pot & trim, etc.).
Does everyone's mytek 192 function like this? While I see visual levels passing when the unit is powered off, I have not actually recorded anything with the power switch off....does this switch really have any function when using battery power (i.e. if I were to forget to turn it on, (no, I'd never get that spun and run my gear....who me? ) would it still make a quality recording?)
I've never come across gear that always powers up when a battery is plugged in, regardless of what the on/off switch says.
Also, while 9 volts is within the range listed on the back of the unit, and I've been told other folks use these 9v DVD batteries as well, I want to make sure I'm not hurting the unit at all.....it sounds so sweet I want it to last forever
Thanks for any help/advice,
-bry
ps- it'd be awesome if you could shoot me a personal email (or pm at least) with any responses, as it will ensure I see your post as soon as possible (I'm running the rig again on fri > sun this coming week....Phish charlotte, raleigh, portsmouth) in case I need to make any alterations prior to running it again. Thanks much.
