NEED SOME HELP , I'm a beginner-stealthing with Neumann KM140 !
« on: September 11, 2011, 06:41:59 AM »
Hi,
I just bought a set of KM140 ,I'm ready now my first recording and the question now is :how can I do to hide them for stealth situation :(
I've seen some topic talking about hats (mics inside) but I'm afraid to have the sound of my recording slightly muffled , what do think?
Thanks in advance for your help :)

If you have the SKM 140 stereoset, use the remote cables and separate the heads from the bodies.  This will make the mics. much smaller and easier to hide.

You could use the supplied stereo mount and mount the mics on a skull cap - then wear a hat that is acoustically open on top of this - these hats are often used in summer as they keep the sun off and let air through to cool the head.

Well, it's a thought and my €'s worth.

Just a little warning for you. Some people here think we shouldn't discuss stealth techniques here. Personally, I don't think it's rocket science and it really isn't too hard to figure out on either side (tapers or security).

Full (or nearly full) sized mics are going to be harder to hide, but just use your imagination. Try things out at home, and make sure you're comfortable before you go out.

Techniques will vary depending on the venue. I recorded a show last weekend and pretty much did everything in the open. Venue staff didn't care (even though there were no taping signs up).

Buy a set of active cables for your KM140s if you want to stealth.  Once you do, get a Vent Air Kangol hat.

bare minimum. otherwise you're basically limited to very few options in setup configurations and hiding spots.

This. If you are going to be trying to do any regular stealthing with KM-140s, then the active cables are a must.

thanks everybody :)
the problem with the active cables from Neumann is the lenght (5 meters or 10 meters) , for me it's too much 1 meter will be enought.
I don't know if it's possible to order a custom version of these active cables.

Cheers

If you can't order them new in custom lengths from Neumann, I'm fairly certain an existing pair can be shortened if you send it back to the factory.

Having owned the 5m version, I hear you. They are too unwieldy for  >:D taping, but that said you will need something. Running w/o actives will be extremely challenging.

I'm sure there are some folks on here who could do the modification.  If you can't get them modified just wrap them around your wasye a few times.  I used to do that until I got my Schoeps actives modified.
