Patching out of a R-09?
« on: March 03, 2012, 09:11:52 AM »
if i'm patching out of the headphone out on the R-09, should i put the volume on the R-09 headphone jack all the way to 100?

or would it be better if it's slightly lower and use the gain on the second recorder (R-09)?

I normally set mine to 100%.  Occasionally, but not often, we'll trim it back.  I recently recorded a band and they asked for a patch into Garageband on one of the musician's laptop.  The little volume adjustment slider in the laptop software was absolutely miserable, so we fine tuned it using the R09 volume.

Remember that the R09 also does optical out as well, which is a feature that most of the newer recorders have abandoned.  I used to run that into H102's and JB3s a lot a few years ago.

I'm more worried about the quality of the headphone amp.

Don't want to overpower it and introduce static or anything.

I've done it a hundred times and it always sounds fine.  I'll qualify that a little bit... it's an analog patch given to a patch-rat.  I think "beggars can't be choosers" comes into play to some extent, but seriously, I've listened to the results at various times, and I've never heard any artifacts to concern me, and I've never had anyone say "there was something wrong with that patch".

If you want to prove it to yourself, play a sample on the R09, patch it into a recorder, pull them both up in an editor and decide if you can hear a difference.
