Peak Level DR100 MKII
« on: March 07, 2012, 04:19:56 PM »
just purchased the DR100 MKII, slowly going through the manual, with regards to the indicator bars L/R and the -16db marker where should the recording level peak, the guide mentions the marker should be about centre but its not in comparsion to the line it represents?

hope this makes sense, just starting out on new kit.

Having used this for quite a few shows now, I have to say that I have yet to really figure out the level meter.  What seems to be true though is 0db is peaking at the right of the meter where you would expect it to be.

Having said that, I think that the meter is fixed in that no matter what the mic gain setting is on the back, the level scale doesn't change.

Finally, for reference, I've been running my levels VERY conservatively.  With my levels peaking a little over half way on the scale, I seem to be getting about -15db peaks.  So, again I think that confirms that the mark on the meter is -12db point.

Look at the meter scale and you'll see the mark I'm talking about...I don't have a key on my keyboard that corresponds to the mark, but it's the same symbol as this '^' only it's pointing downward.

NOTE:  For clarification, the meter is a logarithmic scale.  When I refer to 'half way' above, I mean when my levels are peaking physically a little over half way, so my 'half way' reference mean LINEARLY a little over half way.

I hope this helps.

Since we're discussing levels, how easy are the meters to see and what are the reports on how it operates in different lighting situations?

Also, when adjusting the levels, i.e., line-in is there any noticeable noise or click when the pots are turned?

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger, so I'm going to pick yer brains.

Thanks

The meter is the same as your typical handheld meter.  It's functional and it works fine, but it's not big and there's nothing to cause you to say wow.  The meter on the 661 is alot brighter with better contrast.

Different lighting situations?  It's a new product and it's winter, so I haven't used it outdoors.  Can't imagine it will be a problem though.

No clicks...the pots turn smoothly with no clicks or detents.   Obviously, if you're using the internals, there would probably be some noise from when you touch the deck, but I assume that's not what you're talking about.

There are definitely more than just us two.  If you follow the review that I write you'll see a number off people posting their experiences. I'd guess there are at least ten users here now.

Ten or more users, and most have nothing but good things to say! Pretty good for a new product. I am impressed with what I am reading here and on the 'net. If I can be certain that my existing battery systems will power it without incident, it'll be in my gear bag shortly.
