Minis that terminate in XLR??
« on: September 12, 2014, 11:37:24 AM »
So, i'm looking at the Tascam DR-40, which looks awesome for my needs but for the fact that it only offers powered XLR ins, and no 3.5mm line/mic in…

The problem with this is, i'd really like to run stealthy little mics clipped to the collar/hat…are there any existing that terminate in powered XLR, or can any be easily modified to accomplish this?  ???

The Naiant X-X omnis are super tiny and can be terminated to XLR's.

Also, if you can find them, some Audio-Technica AT853's are terminated to mini-XLR's.  You could then purchase a pair of AT8538 Phantom Adapters to convert the mini-XLR's to full-size XLR's.

Although my Naiant X-X's are terminated in 3.5 mm, I can highly recommend the mics.

Thanks, guys, I hadn't realized that the x-x's could be wired to XLR…I'm going to go with those, probably, as they fit my needs for budget and quality. Finally getting gear together! Woo!

Glad your putting a rig together, but I have to ask the obvious question that no one has seemingly bothered to ask. If the DR-40 only has xlr inputs and you want to perform low profile recordings, why do you consider it to be perfect for your needs?

There are many, many small handheld recorders on the market in the same relative price range with similar or better features. Since almost every set of miniature mics on the planet are terminated to 3.5mm TRS connectors, wouldn't it just make more sense to get a recorder with a 3.5mm input. For roughly the same price, you could get a Sony m10, an infinitely better product than anything that bears the Tascam label.

It'll also be used for other taping uses, many of which will only require the built in mics, which I like the sound of compared to others. And i frankly streched my budget a bit to get the DR-40, which I got for $135 shipped. I should have mentioned that above. $215 is far more than I can afford right now. Also, I wanted something that had phantom for using larger mics down the line.

I ordered a pair of cafs stealth mics from Church Audio, which Chris Church modified with XLR outputs.  I haven't tested them out yet, but he was quite obliging and the cost very reasonable (mics + battery box + mod + shipping = low 200 bucks).  The only downside is I did have to nudge him a bit to finish up the project, but to be fair he had a family crisis to deal with at the time.  Plus, from everything I've heard they are damn excellent mics.  I'm dying to try them out soon.

BTW, it seems he's no longer offering the cafs mics.  His updated website is at http://www.church-audio.com.

CORRECTION: Chris modified the outputs to 1/4 inch, not XLR.  Like you, though, I was getting it for a DR-40, which accepts both 1/4 inch and XLR inputs, so it really doesn't matter.
