the PCM-50 has no option for connecting mics other than a plug in power socket. Not sure why folks are recommending it as they are - its a good recorder but not if you want to add other mics later on. Its also not as good in terms of pre-amp noise as the olympus for example.

The PCM-M10 has a line-in jack as well.  Mic-in and Line-in are stereo miniplugs.

Are you referring to the M10? or d50?/ and fact that it doesn't provide xlr or phantom?
That is in no way a deal breaker as that is what pres and batt boxes are for especially since he won't be using
p48 mics that are stealthable like dpa402x or nevaton mce400. He will be using mini-mics thaat will run off 9v and less I reckon.
I don't own one but the way the tapers around here review the m10, it's pretty solid
for any mics and proper equipment. Also everyone here says the pres are pretty good.

Just snagged a Sony PCM-M10 (used, but mint condition with all accessories) for $174.50 on eBay, now all I need are mics!
