Omni-mic setup
« on: September 12, 2012, 12:04:12 AM »
So... while I'm waiting on a new pair of mic's to arrive next week (hopefully), this weekend I may record a show using one DPA 4061 and possibly line-out of SBD.

It is a small room... what techniques should I try with the DPA 4061?  onstage?  fob/dfc?

Thanks

Assuming it is an amplified show, in a small room, the PA will probably be reinforcing that which isn't coming from the stage, so mainly amplifying the vocals and keyboards say.  The omni in the audience should work, though at that point, you'll be getting the whole mix including the onstage sound and the PA reinforcement, so you will have to keep this in mind in mixing the two sources in post.

It might be better to run the omni onstage or close to stage lip, as long as you are sure you can get what won't be reinforced to much by the PAs -- namely the drums, guitar amps, and bass amp (though admittedly, capturing these all with the right balance between instruments with only a single omni might be difficult).

I'm with Todd on placing it at the stage lip.  A (typically mono) SBD mixed with two stagelip omnis works great.  The only drawback I forsee with this is that both of your sources will be mono so the resulting mono mix will lack the open sense of width and space you get with two omnis.  You may play with paning each source slightly to each side to give the resulting recording some width.  If the best mix of the two has the sources mixed at significantly different levels, then you probably won't want to pan them very far apart, but just a touch may add a welcome sense of space.

What exactly is stage lip if the band is setup not necessarily on a 'stage'?  Do you want any of the PA in the mix?  So, set up right at the 'lip' or perhaps a few feet back so you get -some- PA?

Thanks

If you are recording the SBD output then you don't need or really want much PA output in your on-stage/stage-lip mic.  Set up the mic wherever you'll to get the best balance of clear sound from all the instrument sources on stage, favoring those which aren't represented strongly in the SBD mix.
