Requesting advice on mikes and battery box
« on: April 28, 2013, 03:57:54 PM »
First post - hello everyone

I've done some taping back in the day but nothing for ... ahem... years.
I see that things have moved on since I stealthily held my cassette player in the air.
I'm going to shows by Marcus Bonfanti, The Temperance Movement, The Virginmarys, Fleetwood Mac and need to get my gear up to date.

I have acquired a Roland R05 which has pretty good on board mikes, but I need some external mikes.
I've read the board and note that mikes by Church Audio, Core Sound and Audio Reality are well regarded, but if I ship to Europe, then I'll be stung for shipping costs and three types of tax and handling charges from Her Majesty's finest when they arrive in GB. These might add as much as 35% to the cost.

There must be someone in UK who can wield a soldering iron with the same success. After all it was Brits who gave the world stereo sound, TV, the telephone and Yorkshire Pudding.  ;)

I would be grateful for opinions on the following;

Binaural Stereo Tie Clip Lavalier Cardioid Microphone at £34.99 which is around $54 US

and Stereo Microphone Battery Module & Bass Roll Off Filter at £24.99 which is around $39 US
http://www.micronic.co.uk/store/item/103/stereo-microphone-battery-module-bass-roll-off-filter

This unit is for powering stereo and mono electret condenser lavalier microphones providing the required 'plug in power' these microphones need to operate. It Gives a balanced and stable output to any 3.5mm stereo or mono microphone input socket. An in-line battery holder with integral On/Off switch, stereo/mono switch, belt clip, 3.5mm stereo jack input socket and can be used as a desk stand. Operates on a single 1.5volt AA battery. Dimensions 26mm x 10.75mm - matchbox size. Many devices such as video cameras / PA sound systems and Mixers / mixing desks that have a microphone input but are not phantom powered / plug in power. This unit is the perfect solution to getting your electret condenser microphone to work with these devices.
This version has a bass roll off filter that prevents booming when recording loud concerts e.t.c. Our microphones have a very flat and extended low frequency response. In some cases, where the hall has a high bass response ("hall boom"), when recording near a room boundary, air conditioner / fan, traffic noise, or when a sound system is equalized strongly toward the bass, it is desirable to roll off the low bass frequency response. The bass roll-off filter rolls off frequencies below 120 Hertz at 6 dB/octave.
In some extreme cases when recording a very LOUD concert you can use this unit in a line in input instead of a microphone input. Used this way the levels are reduced and give amazing result.

If not these, does anyone have any better ideas?

Thanks.

Try and keep your eyes peeled for somebody in the EU selling off some older gear.   That's a "better" option.  The Church Stuff is excellent value for the money and it'll depend whether you want omnis or cards.

Barring that, keep your eyes open for other decent mics (AT 853's, Microphone Madness, etc.) and I'm sure something wills surface soon.  It's _that_ time of year where people are cleaning out their closets readying for the festivals this summer.

Best of luck.

And by the way, that battery box in the OP? I am VERY suspicious of something running on a 1.5 V battery. You want 9V or 12V.
