Hyper cards placement
« on: April 08, 2013, 04:57:22 PM »
Hi there!

I just got a set of sweeeeeet SP CMC-8's / AT 943's Hypers set from darktrain and I still have to get some clips/mounts for them.

In the meanwhile, a couple of Qs which I suppose have been answered a couple of times, but still...

-the hyper cardioid pattern makes this kind of mics specially sensitive to orientation & placement, right?

-I mostly/only record in st>:Dlth (taping culture in Spain is unexistant) ; will they be able to pick up the sound decently when mounted on glasses like this? (( http://i48.tinypic.com/33en1nm.jpg )) It's the way I use to mount my CA14s omnis and it works a treat, specially when up close to the PA, but I'm not sure if they hypers would be able to pick up the sound when mounted like that.

-Any advice on specific clips, mounts, shock mounts or the like would be appreciated :)

Thanks! ;D

Yup, just mount 'em on the glasses and don't move your head too much.

Thanks Acid, I will try it at the next show.
But in order to try that I need some clips. I have one from a Sony ECM719 mic that fits the AT943 body perfectly, but it's just one clip for one mic :P I need at least another one and I'm not sure if the desired diameter is 6'3mm like this clip: www.ebay.com/itm/181074572193 Opinions? I'd prefer to have a hard plastic, sticky clip rather than those with metallic ties like this one: www.ebay.com/itm/181074575884 ... Thanks :)

I mounted my DPA 4061s on my sunglasses a few times and I did it by running the cables through thin 'tubes' of black material (to replicate a croakie (sp?) type of arrangement and then just secured the mics and the material to the arms of the classes with a neat wrap of black electrical tape with the business end of the mic just sticking out from the tape a 1/8"

I did it both with the arm of the glasses fed into the ''croakie' and with the croakie just running straight down from the tape area (I liked this option better)

I tended to have the glasses pushed up onto my head (didn't want to look like a sunglass wearing dick)

The material (and cables) then just runs down innocently into you shirt where you can conceal your reel to reel or other recording device

Easy to set up and not at all conspicuous and more suited to your cards as they will be pointed to the source (when not looking round :-) )

This option is more suited to sunny days, so not to northern England

You could also just use a little tape....

I prefer not to use tape. I've had mixed experiences when I taped my CA14s (before using the shockmounts I made for them), it sometimes worked mediocrely, other times fine, and most times poorly. Probably the shape of the CA14s with the huge windscreens etc makes them a little "non-tapeable", and maybe the shape of the 943s is more appropiate for securing them to the arms of the glasses. I will try at a show this Friday which I don't have much interest in, so I can test different things. Thanks!

I'm gonna have my first pull tomorrow with the 943s and I will be mounting them on the glasses. Let's hope it turns out fine! :)

Aaaaaand... It sounds EXCELLENT, and less sensitive to head movements than I thought. Great stuff, can become my main rig above the CA14s since I love their sound and they're smaller and more convenient ;D
