so i've finally acquired enough gear to mic multiple instruments, which i'll be doing next weekend...3-piece (bass/guitar+vox/kit)

not multi-tracking...mixing everything down to stereo

this will be a small coffeehouse type setting, so i won't have a lot of real estate to work with

any tips for a n00b?

Long cables and duct tape...  Keep you junk off to the side so you're not in way...

cable length isn't a problem (that's what she said?)
my tape is way fancier than duct
taking up a big footprint isn't a huge concern...i obviously don't intend to stretch out, and i'm very familiar with being onstage (just not with my own gear)

i'm stoked...i've had this fucking kick drum mic for 3 years and finally get to use it

one of the things i say to first time tapers looking for advice: you'll make a hundred shitty tapes before you make your first great one, and that's OK. i keep reminding myself this same exact thing.

will you get to setup before and hear the soundcheck? Got a set of IEMs (not noise canceling, noise isolating, that is a key difference)? Those would be two things I'd want to have if I was dropping everything to 2ch on the fly. Always plan where the null is on your mic pattern and use that to eliminate as much bleed as possible. I've pointed mics at a 70 degree angle off-axis to what I wanted to record because that put the null of the pattern directly facing what I didn't want to bleed into that channel before, gaining something like 10db of rejection. Other then that, shit on stage is so much louder than in the section, to the order of 30db or so.

Are you getting a patch for the vox or just double micing it? Thats one thing I would try and get a direct out for, the rest you can probably just double-mic with whatever the house is using.
