Topic: Cheapy Mics, what sounds less shitty?

Been saving for a while and I just took the plunge on a suped mac mini (I dont own a computer, so that was a no-brainer) and an FA-101.

My eventual goal (in addition to archiving) is to be able to kick down live matrices immediately after the show (built in dvdr/cdr -- what a great idea!).

Before I go and invest an equivelant amount on mics I plan to borrow/rent a few that match my rig well. In the mean time I'll need some cheapy's to hold me over (and eventually take standby position as backups).

What does everyone use for their standby/backup rig?

I know what sounds really good, I guess my question is -- whats okay? I'll probably just grab the bestish deal off ebay (200-300/pair) at this point -- anyone have advice for me?

Studio projects, audio technica, akg, nakamichi, etc. All make mics that can be bought used in that price range. What kind of music are you looking to tape and in what kind of venues?

run and heard a lot of less expensive mics, and don't think you can beat the studio projects c-4 package. C'mon....card caps, omni caps, bodies, shocks for what, 300 bucks? I like the sound too. A little bright for my personal taste, but that's my hangup. can't beat that. light years ahead of nak cm100 or 300 or anything else in that range, imo.

another vote for the SP C-4's.  I don't think there is more "bang for the buck" than these...

RE: kind of music
Think ranging from acoustic bluegrass to an arrangement of instruments similar to moe. Mostly in small venue / bar rooms.

The mac mini is 6.5" x 6.5" x 2"
The FA-101 is ~8.5" x 5.5" x 2"
I've got a 7" touchscreen lilliput (no mouse or keyboard necessary)
Total power draw is 3-4A, so I can hope for AC power or use a SLA pack.
I've also got some parts toward a 28AH lithium rig.

Its certainly not stealthing size, but Im hoping it wont be too bad.... Have I ventured down the road to hell? Think that rig is all luggable?

RE: SP4's .... give me a day or two to decide -- but dont wait around if you get a killer offer. I see that kit w/ accessories/case for $300 too.

PS: Whats the "tickets" thingy in the profile?

I wouldn't count on AC power.  And an SLA battery solution large enough to handle that load would be an absolute beast...ugh, I know I wouldn't want to schlep it around.  Go lithium if you can to keep size / weight down.

I'm figuring 50% of the time I'll get AC power (remember I plan to get board or passthru patches from the band).

Thanks for the tips guys. The power consumption is lower than a laptop, but 3A is a beast I know.

Lithium does seem like the way I need to go, especially since my supply is 18.5V (thats four lithium in series!).
