Schoeps Classics Website Removed/Changed
« on: December 24, 2014, 06:56:10 PM »
Looks like Schoeps has taken down their 'classics' site and replaced it with a new, less detailed and less informative link on their current page.

The new link is shown below:

http://www.schoeps.de/en/history_products

The old site (which no longer works) was here:

http://schoepsclassics.de

I've never looked at the old site, but luckily Archive has it in their database.  Last 'snapshot' was in Jan. this year, which I assume was current with whatever Schoeps had written.

Thumbs down for change, but thumbs up for Archive!  Just another reason to donate for anyone who hasn't!

^ That's awesome!  Thanks so much for that.  So much more info than what they've gone to.  I also found the pictures to be helpful as well.

The "Schoeps Classics" Web site doesn't belong to Schoeps. It was created and is maintained by Bernhard Vollmer, their head of quality control and customer support, on his own time. Of course he has the company's approval for this. But basically he created the site because people kept asking him for this type of information; since repairs are part of his turf, he's the person at the company who deals with their older products the most.

The site actually is still on line. The HTTP error isn't a 404 (page not found)--it's 403 (access denied). If the site doesn't become accessible again by the end of vacation, I'll check in with Bernhard and ask what's going on.

--The "Product history" pages on Schoeps' own Web site were never intended as a replacement for the "Schoeps Classics" site. They were assembled as part of the company's 60th anniversary celebration in 2008. There's really no connection between the one thing and the other, except that of course Bernhard was consulted about those pages.

Thanks for your clarification David Satz.  I'll edit my initial post because Schoeps is a great company and after reading your response, I realize that the information provided in that informative 'classics' site really is icing on the cake, even if it is Mr. Vollmer's spare time effort.  My thumbs down comment was a short sighted comment at being frustrated that it looked like I wouldn't be able to link to the info anymore, but sometimes a Schoeps customer forgets how good we have it when we deal with such a great company with such a long history.

Thanks for adding perspective with your response.

td, no harm done whatsoever in my opinion.

And probably the company ought to update and extend the "Product history" pages anyway--their coverage ends 10 years ago with the original shotgun, whereas the later, digital variant with the second capsule and the built-in DSP is a huge step forward and has become quite important in the film/video industry (it has high directivity at mid and low-mid frequencies as well as high frequencies; with conventional shotguns, the narrow pattern starts only in the upper midrange). Plus more recently, they came out with a lovely little microphone designed specifically for vocal soloists, which effectively combines the best features of large- and small-diaphragm capsules for that purpose.

Those products aren't so useful for the kind of recording we talk about here, but they're a big deal for their respective markets, and for Schoeps as a company. And they wouldn't belong on the "Schoeps Classics" site, which is really about products that aren't made any more (plus some items on that site were prototypes that were never in production, such as the "Zippy the Pinhead" version of the CMTS stereo mike).

For that matter, I know of a few more items that I think belong on Bernhard's site. Let's see what his current plans are, and maybe I'll bother him about those.

^ For me personally, that classics site has aided in my own knowledge base, both from the text and the photo's with respect to sorting through and validating information, for example, on sales that are posted on ebay.  I know we also have gotten into discussions here alot on those items as well, and you're always the guy that can set the record straight on faulty or questionable information.  At the same time, it's nice to have that classics resource available to conduct some independent information mining as well.

Since you mentioned the possibility of following up, I thought it might be helpful knowing how that site has been used...at least by me.

The "Schoeps Classics" site is back on line now. I see a few updated links and other small changes, so I gather that Bernhard just took it off line temporarily to clean it up.

--Edited two days later to add: I pointed this thread out to Bernhard and got a nice note back from him. The reason for the outage was that he re-registered the site so that now it does, in fact, belong to Schoeps GmbH. I'm not sure why that should have caused an outage, but perhaps in the process, the physical hosting of the site was transferred as well.
