AFAIK, it's real gain control, so very low gain means just that and there is no danger of overloading the stage so long as the meters say you are under zero.Be aware that mic input gain control is analog and changes smoothly, whereas line level input control is digital and makes a slight zipper noise (ticking) when turned fast.
