This might be a little premature, but Sony says that recordings done in PCM on the new Hi-MD format can only be transferred to PC via USB if they came from an analog source. So does that rule out the possibility of using an external A/D with your mics to tape?

In other words, if you pop a CD in your stereo and use the optical out to make an MD from it, you won't be able to copy it to your PC because the SCMS code will read "first gen - copy prohibit".

But on the other hand they don't really say if Hi-MD recorders will work like a D100, where only the original recording can be digitally transferred elsewhere.

Sorry if i missed the answer to this in Sony's specs.

Oh and I'm sure many of you have read this post on minidisc.org: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=3692&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

You will do a lot of laughing, and a lot of crying...hehehe

I don't know if the post resolves anything, or if it's all speculation.

That thread was complete retardation.  I couldn't even get through the first page without wanting to punch my mointer.

But to answer your question, as far as I know, files imported/recorded digitlaly cannot be exported digitally.  I'm sure someone will run tests on this once the units start shipping.

and to contradict myself, this has been stated, "Please do remember they can't stop you from digitally transfering the files in real time, you just can't upload them at high speed..."

I assume if you wanted to do this digitally you'd have to have a HiMD Deck and use the optical out.....there's another $500 in a format that won't make it out of the decade.
