M-S mixing requires one thing...and that is the ability to accurately hear what you are doing.

in post, you can work on small pieces of a track and adjust the ammount of M vs S by trial and error until you like it. 
on the fly, you can do things in real time, and use the variable aspects of a "knob on your preamp" to make these adjustments.

eather way, its the same thing.  you make these changes until *you* think it sounds best. 
Of course, its easier to hear what you are doing when you are in a controlled environment (like at home).  But, whith the right gear, doing it live works very well.

I ran M/S once...using ADK TLs and an MP2. Did everything "on the fly", came out pretty good. It's an interesting sound, one that took awhile to get used to. Wouldn't want every tape to sound like that though.

It is strange to turn just one gain knob and see both both levels go up or down...
