Connecting to Lunatec v3? What are good options?
« on: June 29, 2004, 03:27:38 PM »
Hi, I'm considering purchasing a Lunatec V3 so I need some sort of portable recorder.

I was curious what (moderately) cheap options are available for recording...

Are the Hi-MD sony minidisc recorders any good>?
 Iriver iHP-140?

I want a really portable option, but if buying these is just going to be a waste I'd rather save up for something that is going to work.

Thanks! :)

Hm. One of these things is not like the other. :) I wouldn't call the V3 cheap OR particularly portable - if you can find one used, they go for around $1300. They also don't have an internal power source, so by the time you add an SLA to the equation, you're looking at some serious lugging. Obviously they're not a rack unit, but if you're looking at a Hi-MD or an Iriver, that's way on the small end of recording units and something tells me you'd want to go smaller.

There's a big thread on the Hi-MDs in the Recording Gear forum, and one on the Iriver as well, but they each have significant limitations from what I understand (no digi-out on the Hi-MD if you record digi-in, and a file size limitation on the Iriver that will limit you to 795MB or ~80 minutes). The V3 also has no optical out so it wouldn't be able to go right into either unit - you'd need a format converter to go optical in on either one.

If you're willing to go a little bigger (and expensive), a used DAT or Nomad Jukebox 3 will run you $175-$300...

I got this email from micsupply today:

Grace Designs has announced the much anticipated upgrade offering for current Lunatec V3 owners and a new product option on new V3's -- a TOSLINK out connection.  Please read the detail to this offering at http://micsupply.com/lunatecv3.htm .  The MicSupply.com price for the new model is $1475 shipped and includes a battery cable.

Other product news:  Sound Devices 722/744 - new estimated ship date is August.

As some of you may have noticed, we are struggling to get a new shopping cart system in place at MicSupply.com.  Our old host ION-CART (Costco) has closed down their service.  The new cart host we engaged with a month ago is not answering the phone .  Needless to say, we are scrambling to find a new solution as I write.

To ease the purchasing pain of no shopping cart, we are offering across the board free shipping to anyone who has purchased from MicSupply.com in the past.  For the time being orders will have to be called in.

With that...have a great Summer!
