That screenshot I posted from Cooledit (probably not working as sharingthegroove server down) was the result of:

Sound Professionals CMC2 mics>Minidisc (no battery box, presumably mic-in).

It sounds reasonable, if a little 'crunchy'. Really clear between songs though.

Happy to report it was the 9V running out - put in a fresh battery and last night came out just fine, no distortion or overloading. ;D
