Topic: Recording to Palm Pilot/Nomad

Greetings,

I am a DAT taper whose Sony M1 DAT is pretty much cooked.  I met a guy from the Netherlands on SCI tour last spring that was recording onto his Compac PDA.  There is no point in getting my DAT fixed or buying a new one when this new technology is available, IMO.  I am tired of buying DAT tapes that take up space, cost money and preying that the tape loads properly.

I have heard about Creative Labs Jukebox 3 and NOMAD.  I was wondering about the pros and cons of these things, what kind of inputs they have, if they can do A/D conversion (or if I need an A/D converter) and what the ballpark costs for these things are.  In addition, Are there any other similar products out there that are better?

As for the Creative Jukebox 3 and/or Nomad, it is the same machine.  The proper name is the Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox 3.  I use a JB3 - wonderful machine.  It has a 1/8" analog/optical combo line-in (like ost MD recorders), and has USB1 and 2 as well as firewire as output to your computer (digital) or 2 analog outs.

Most people use the Edoril UA5 in front of it, but there are lots of combinations possible, especially with the opt. mod V3, the AD20 and many others having optical out.  Also, the JB3 itself has a AD (via 1/8" analog input), though it seems to have some problems with harddrive noise...  Some folks don't mind it, others avoid analog input...  I recommend an AD.

As for price, it is a bargain at $150 (ebay - only place to get them now).  You'll want to get a second battery (if you can find one) to get up to 5 hours recording time. 

Are there better products out there?  Certainly!  The Fostex FR-2 is similar in thinking, but will run you about $1500???  Marantz makes a HD recorder now, but even that one is $600+.

Get the JB3, or fix up the DAT.  Don't upgrade beyond that until a real pro HD recorder comes onto the market at a reasonable price...

My D8 sorta fried on me over a year ago (tapes kept getting jammed, etc.), so I bought a JB3 and then used my D8 as the A/D converter.  Your M1 MIGHT work the same way.  Try recording without putting a tape in.  If you get levels, you should be able to get the 7-pin out of it into the optical mini on the JB3 just like I do.  I've had no problems with this setup and have been doing it for over a year, using it at least once weekly.  You can pick up a JB3 on ebay, but the 7 pin is more of a challenge.  The cable I use is Sony's POC-DA12SP.

one thing to consider, the jb3 is limited to 16/44.1 or 16/48... dat quality. The pda's have the *potential* to record 24/96... they are still quirky and I don't think 24/96 is entirely stable yet.
