Win XP home/FW 410/WaveLab 5 locks up

I've installed WavLab 5 twice this week  long story... but I've noticed that when I try to record at first with WaveLab my computer routinely locks up. I can't contr/alt-del or anything. I have to disconnect the power and try again. This will continue again and again.

I found my solution under start/contro panel/ sounds and audio/ and make the FW 410 spdif my preferred recording devices in two locations. No more computer lock ups. Also I make sure WaveLab defaults to FW 410 spdif before I start to record. If it isn't then set it correctly and close WaveLab. Maybe restarting would be a good idea as well. Turn on V3, turn on FW410 then lappie always finds the device.

you are hot plugging your firewire 410? they should ALWAYS be turned on at the same time you know??? that could render either the 410's or the lappies firewire port unuseable

I thought hot plugging meant you had your 410 turned on and then plugging that into your already turned on lappie. All that being bad.

I thought the right way was set and plug in all the wires. Turn on V3,then 410, then lappie.

What should always be turned on at the same time? Can't be the lappie since that takes time to boot up. I saw a quote about this on these boards but it was kind of Greek to me.

ahh, i see that it says 410 then lappy. ive been doing them both about the same time

is there anything more annoying than the flashing blue light on the 410 untill it reckognizes the laptop? that thing is horrendus

When I first started setting up I would sometimes forget to turn the 410 on by pushing in the on button. I think that flashing blue light mezmorized me or something.

I have to send back my V3 for repair after just two weeks of taping. I can't get my ANSR light to come on many times.

Hey, when you all use the HPF switches on your V3, do you all hear a significant difference in your recordings? I did some test recordings at home and I can't hear any difference. I'll have Grace double check that and maybe change the jumpers for a higher setting. The 100 Hz roll off on my mics are very noticable but I can't hear any change between the off, switch 1 or switch 2 setting using the HPF on the V3.

That would be during play back through my home stereo with two 12" subs. (referring to the HPF switches and not hearing any differences)

As described on pages 3 and 8 of your V3 owner's manual, the V3 features
a highly configurable high pass filter section.  The front panel
switches select the corner frequency of the filter section.  Position 1
is a higher corner frequency and position 2 is a lower corner frequency.
  The corner frequency can be selected via internal jumpers.  Either
100Hz/50Hz or 125Hz/75Hz.  The filter characteristic is also user
selectable between active and passive.  In passive mode, the slope of
the filter is a subtle 6dB/octave.  When placed in active mode the curve
is more aggressive at 12dB/octave.

If you have not adjusted these jumper settings, your unit is probably in
the 100Hz/50Hz and passive (6dB/octave) mode.  Depending on your source
material / acoustic recording environment/ mic setup, the low end cuts
of the high pass filter may be subtle and difficult to hear.

that 410 is perfectly capable of producing good tapes!

i ran a stock 410 for awhile, even though my wmod 410 blows my stock 410 out of the water, i made a few good tapes with a stock one!

I don't think the 410 quality is in question. Just some initial computer lock ups when setting it up for the first time. A little adjustment under the control panel fixed my problem.

Did anyone get a 32 page manual with their 410? I didn't get one with my new 410 but the pdf manual is online at m-audio.com. I still can't get a digital out audio signal from my lappie to my stereo.

Just a follow up. Grace emailed me. Had my unit on the bench two days after I mailed it.

"Your V3 got delivered today and I just got it on the bench.  Looks like
a capacitor in the ANSR control signal circuitry had malfunctioned.
This was replaced and your ANSR is working fine.  I'll be checking out
the filter section this afternoon and giving your unit a complete bench
test.  If all goes well, you can expect it to ship back out Tuesday.
Please let me know if you have any questions."
