Need answer soon: Cardiod mics in use tonight
« on: September 22, 2004, 03:23:51 AM »
hi all, i have a quick question as i will be taping with my new cardiods tonight and i am in doubt.

I have never been to the venue, but from what i heard its small, around 150 people. Very simple setup: stage in the far end, bar to the left and that's it. PA will most likely be standing on both sides of the stage.

Now, should i use my cards or stay with the omni's?
I am planning to wear the cards somewhere just above my niples, hiding in the shirt. (hat is no option, cable to short and bit obvious i think)

I think i will have some people right in front of me so, the sound from the PA could be obstructed (?)

any suggestions?

What band, what mics, how loud and how bassy do you expect it to be in there?

My cards (SPCMC2s) work well in loud, bassy rock situations.
UK based taper: MK4>Nbox Platinum>PCM-M10

I'll wear omni mics at about collar height (I'm 6ft 2inches) and I never hear what I would consider to be obstructed sound from the PA.  I just picked up AT853 cards, and I am going to run them this weekend, but otherwise have never run cardoid stealth, so I will let you know.

Also, if its dark, don't underestimate how stealthy you'll be with mics clipped on a hat.  My first stealth job was with a rather large one point mic (sony909A) attatched to a buckle on the sholder of my leather jacket- no one said a word.  I fully intend to clip my new mics onto a stocking hat... I don't anticipate any problems.

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

Bit stuck because I've never heard anything recorded with your onmnis (the OKMIIRS), but the AT831s (I guess these are the same as I use, the Sound Professionals CMC2s?) are fine in most stealth situations.

If you have the SP battery box with bass roll off, try setting it to around 95Hz.

I clip mine to my shirt collar by the way.

I have created something very spectacular using the remains of a 9.99 euro headphone. If it works i will create a complete website tomorrow.  ;D

if you're really worried about getting caught with the mics on a hat, you might wanna try a hoodie - you'll be hot as hell, but no one will see any cords.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.

What about clipped to eyeglasses with and a baseball cap?  Most people at the show won't care or notice cables running down the back of your neck.  Nor will they have any idea what the microphones are.  Unless you get face to face with a security guard it usually takes something like a mic stand to get you caught.

I always worry most about the light on the NJB3.

Easy way around that is start the recording with the house lights still on. I run a little low on levels just to be safe and never look at the JB3 again untill the show is over. It's a part of stealthing that is hard to do for most tapers. I was used to constantly checking levels, battery life etc. You just need to set it and forget it. If it comes out, great, if not, hopefully the show was good....

True enough.  I usually neurotically check the levels.  But, when I record my own band's shows, I do exactly what you are saying.
