Tape of my D100 has stop to run, and the offer for repair servicing is 700$ !!!! I used the D100 5 years..

So I am decided to replace my DAT with a newer alternative.
I am tapping Jazz and Blue live shows mainly.

What I need is portability, ease of use in the dark, battery live of 3 hours max, wave recording format
and if possible correction of the mikes with cut off low filter capabilities ( most of the condenser Mikes I have used are increasing level of bass tone sounds)
I have found the annoncement of the Edirol R-1 quite attractive http://www.roland.com/products/en/R-1/index.html

But i would like to have comments from users.
Did anybody had the chance to get an hand on it?

Other suggestions are welcome as alternative to my dead DATWalkman.
Regards Gary

Who quoted the $700 repair tag?  What problem, exactly, are you experiencing?  Have you considered sending it to Paul at Pro-Digital for repair?  Have you considered buying a new/used M1/D100?

Sorry, no idea about the R-1, but thought I'd toss out a few questions.

Thanks Brian , but i am living here in Belgium and this DAT has been sold in small qantity so there is limited experience for repair... This explain the high price tag.

Have still not been able to catch any comment about the edirol R-1 !

Just did some searching around. One site has it for $440 (retail is 550). For about 200 less, you can get a refurbished Nomad Jukebox 3 via ebay Creative store. Would be a smarter investment. Some comparisons:

R-1:

Works on Flash Cards (anywhere from 32 MB to 2 GB)
Works on 2 AA Batteries (Rechargable or Alkaline)
 - Battery life is about 2.5 hours with recording

JB3:

Has internal hard drive (either 20 or 40 GB)
Works on up to 2 Creative Recharable Batteries
 - 2 Batteries work up to 4 hours (fully charged)

The advantages I see with the R-1 is that it can record up to 24bits (while the JB3 can only do 16), and it is a lot smaller than the JB3. With the Flash Cards only being up to 2 GB (~3 hours of music), you may find your self having to bring either an extra card and/or extra batteries. You will not have to worry about these problems with the JB3. Hope that helps

Also those 2GB flash cards aren't exactly cheap yet...
