m-audio transit usb -> ibook HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: September 12, 2004, 07:20:50 PM »
Been lurking in the background, learning a whole bunch from this site...great site, great info and great people.  Hopefully someone can help me.  just bought an ibook g4(os x 10.3.5) 1ghz 12", 256 ram and an m-audio transit usb to transfer my dats with and i'm ready to take a sledgehammer to the transit. It worked fine the first time I hooked it up and transfered half of the sam bush show from the canyons in park city ut this year into sound studio.  I tracked the first set out and it sounds fine.  Now I'm trying to get the rest of the show transfered to the ibook and it is driving me insane.

i'm running the D8 -> miniplug lineout->m-audio transit-> to the usb on the ibook->soundstudio. the software play thru is clipping and sounds like trash, and what bothers me more is the audio sound studio is recording sounds even worse.  I've tried several other shows I recorded at rockygrass and telluride of this year and they all have the same problem.  Listening to any show on my D8 with headphones sounds fine but any audio transferred through the transit is covered with garbled digi crap.   I went to the m-audio site and updated the drivers / firmware for the transit to the latest and this did not help.  I have turned off the airport card. I'm not running any other applications.  I'm new to the ibook so I'm not sure how to find what all processes that are running but i don't think any thing has changed since my first recording session that worked.  My Sound Studio scratch disk is the hard disk root and there are 16Gigs free.

On the transit settings I have active channels set to "Inputs 1&2", Sample Depth 16 bits. Latency set to Medium(have changed this to high and low and it made no difference.).  when I open a new file in sound studio i set Sound Quality Rate to 44.100khz, sample size: 16 bits. channels = stereo. Sound Studio ->audio -> audio input/output settings ->advanced settings I changed both the Software play - though latency and the Recording bufffer size / latency to the highest and lowest settings and this did not make a difference.  From my understanding I should set the recording buffer size HIGH and the play through latency low( but this only matters for monitoring the sound.)  I've tried 2 different usb cables from the transit to the ibook. I've tried 2 different miniplug -> miniplug cables from the D8 to the transit.  The one thing I think I noticed is that initially the transit mounted itself on the desktp and now it doesn't...but i'm new to the ibook and apple in general so I might be thinking of something else but shouldn't this mount itself to the desktop?  a mac friend of mine(but not taper aware) suggested running onyx and repairing permissions, i did this with the transit connected and w/o the transit connected and nothing changed.

Is there something I'm missing?  something I haven't done?  Am I missing something about the latency or the sampling rate (44.1khz, 48khz, 32.?) I believe my D8 has 3 settings 48, 44.1 and LP? i record mostly on the 44.1 setting and sometimes on the LP. I'm at a complete loss...I have a bunch of shows that need converted from dat to cd and I'd thought this new setup was going to be the way to go within my budget...but I'm rapidly loosing hope.  I noticed Spark XL is used by some would that help?

Please Help !!! Dave

Have you tried turning off the software play through?  This sounds like a software issue, so replacing hardware wont fix it.

And is there a reason you're going analog in instead of digital?
