Is there "Band toTaper" etiquette...?
« on: November 29, 2004, 12:49:05 PM »
I taped a band a few weeks ago and they asked me (afterwards and having not heard the recording) not to circulate the show...they're reasoning being that they were a bit off at the show and wouldn't want a poor performance to taint opinions about them (they're local).

So I check the band's website today to check their schedule...and now they've put that show up on their site in mp3. I don't mind that they put my recording on their site (it is their music after all), though it might have been good form to let me know anyway. Should I even bother asking them if it's ok to trade the show (don't worry, no one here will want it) since they've already made it available?

If it's someone you like and you want to tape regularly in the future, I'd contact them.  Tell them that you saw they put the show up on their site and ask them if they would like help with regular taping.  Work yourself into a position as archivist so you have board access and guestlist spots and get credit for your work on their site.

If they don't want you to circulate that one show, honor their request.

did they put up your source of the show they asked you not to circulate?  that seems weak to me, like they were afraid you'ld ask for payment or something.  i'd be a little bummed.  like maynard said, explain how the taper philosophy works, and get yourself in with them.  also, see if you can get credit on the site as the recordist.

While they didn't include any of the recording info (supplied when I sent them the show), they did give me credit on their site...but I'm more interested in why they asked me not to circulate the show, especially if they had plans to upload my recording before I even sent it to them.

why?  it is a new band that is trying to help promote themselves....

while I am against people "trading" mp3s, if a new band that is relatively unknown wants to use my recording to help promote them...so be it...

to each their own I guess...

but imo if a new band, who does not have an album recorded wants to use something I taped to help promote them...I am cool with, if not for any other reason, it should help spur interest, and keep the band around....

Whose show is it?
I'd say the band has the ultimate authority (or for signed bands the label) to any of their music.
It does seem weird that they asked you not to circulate and then they posted it.....but who ever said musicians aren't flaky!
I'd say that you getting credit for the recording is all you can really ask, unless you have a contract.

I taped a local band friday night and the singer asked me "could you delete all that" after the show.  He wasn't happy with his own performance I guess, although the show turned out okay.

I think that's just a typical reaction from any perfectionist.  Once they hear the recording they'll realize it wasn't a bad show, maybe not a great show, but not a bad show.

In answer to your question, if the band is circulating the show there's no reason you shouldn't also.

I agree...as long as the show isn't traded in mp3 (apparently you can download the show on mp3 from their site), I have no problem with them using it on their site. Besides, the recording may be mine but the music is theirs...thanks for all the input.

Does the band have a forum???  I would contact the band and ask them if you could release your LOSSLESS copy to those interested via a B&P offer through the bands website/forum...

It might be that they have some fans that would like a lossless version of the DLable stuff they got up there already...

But I would honor the bands request no matter what they do or don't do...  I taped a sitar player from India and he told me not to trade...  Thing is a student of his lives near me and bugs me for a copy everytime I see him.  I told him I can't, but I did tell him to email his teacher (the one I taped and said no trading) and ask him if he could have a copy...

When I tape, one of my first stops afterwards is to post an offer on the band's message board (if they have one) to give out a few free copies of the show...the offer I made on this band's board was deleted. I was then sent an e-mail when the band said they didn't want to circulate the show until they heard it. Granted this is piddley, but my issue is why didn't the band e-mail me to tell me the recording passed muster before they made it available elsewhere?

As for lossless...I think these are the more local, hard-corish fans who still buy casettes (this is Baltimore you know).

The only time I have had a band request that I don't share a recording is when the guitar player fried his gear and had to borrow a head for the rest of the set. he was just plain old embarased and didn't feel the set did the band justice. Everyone else there still had a blast though!  :D it is kinda crappy that the band you are dealing with didn't contact you or at least post that YOU recorded it, but as it has been said, when AREN'T musicians flaky.
