Need help with speed correction
« on: January 06, 2005, 03:53:25 AM »
This 1st gen cassette is off pitch.  It plays way too fast.  Here is a sample track:

Here is a reference song.  It is the same song from a different concert that plays back at the proper pitch.

I think the song is in the key of D and I tried comparing the pitch of a tonic note in each track to determine how much faster the fast one was.  Not having much luck with this one.  Is anyone gifted enough to come up with a number (ie it runs 6.746% too fast)?  Thanks for any ideas.

Someone on the Radiohead Hub did a speed correction of the 1994.02.21 Reading tape, It turned out well, ask someone there, I bet they'd help.

Your best bet is to find a nice cassette deck where you can adjust the playback speed.  Adjusting speed can be done in the digital world, but can be a little more clunky sounding.  So I would try and stick to analog playback for the speed correction.
My portable rig:

Yes definitly find a cassette deck with pitch control and dial it in by ear. Analog pitch shifting is a lot better thatn any digital that I've heard personally... Someday the technology will catch up I'm sure...

You guys are right, I just don't have a deck that can swing this one.  I'll wait and find some other way.
