My JB3 Hard Drive crapped out
« on: January 22, 2005, 12:45:05 PM »
OK, so I dropped it. But now whenever I try to use it I get a Hard Disk Problem message.
I have a recording on there that I'm really not wanting to lose (assuming it isn't fried already).
Anybody ever have this happen? Did you get it resolved?
Any suggestions on what I can do to try to recover the data?

Tim

Oh, anybody selling a JB3?

what happens when you try to power on your jb3? does it power on but stall at the startup or eax screen. if so, i think there is a remedy. search ts.com and nomadness for the solution. you can always replace the hard drive in the jb3 also if the drive is totally beat.

Not sure about getting the show off the drive. It is not formatted to be read by an os, so you could not hook it up to a pc for data recovery.

There are detailed instructions on how to swap out the drive though. Just google for it. I can't find the link.

If you cant get it going - maybe you can take the drive out and try to get Windows to recognize it...perhaps you can see the files...You might need some sort of special harness to hook it to an IDE port...

Just a suggestion - not sure if that would really work at all...

The hard disc is just a regular laptop (2.5") hard disc. If you were feeling brave, you could open up your jb3 (I think in the FAQ there is a link to how to upgrade the HDD, follow those instructions... CAREFULLY). With a 2.5" -> 3.5" adaptor you'd just plug that into your PC as a 2nd hard drive (obviously choose an unused IDE channel or set the drive to slave mode). That should appear as a new drive to your PC, and unless is it totally fucked you may be able to pull some info off it.

At a pinch you could pass the drive onto a company who specialise in data recovery. Those guys can sometimes work miracles (for a fee, of course).

Pop a new HDD in your JB3 and you should be set... good luck!

best regards,
stephen

If that's correct, then I was talking shit (hey, it happens!) and you should ignore me :)

I don't know why creative chose to do it that way, but because the drive is formatted with their firmware Windows can not access it directly. If you connect your jb3, and use explorer (at least in xp) it shows the contents, but you can't even copy or paste them.

You were right about the swapping part though. I forgot about the jb3 faq here. It most likely contains the link.

Make sure you open your jb3 carefully. The cable from the board to the screen is very short.
