Lowepro Nova 5 - too much bag for me?
« on: February 02, 2005, 11:20:09 PM »
I'm looking to get a new bag.  The Rakgear I'm using right now just isn't for me.  It's deceptively cramped.  So I want to get a shoulder style bag, but I don't want to shell out the money for a Sonicase or anything like that right now.  I'm thinking of the Nova 5, but I can't really remember how big it is.  I don't want to have a ton of empty space in my bag...

So anyway, here's what's going to be in it:
Audix Micros in a TINY pelican case (about the size of a cellphone)
V3
JB3
Two walmart batteries
A JBox
20' mic cables
bunch of connectors

The side pockets will be used for misc cables and adapters for SBD taping, plus other stuff like a flashlight, etc.  So is the Nova 5 too big?  Should I go for a 4?  3?

The only other thing I should add is that when the Marantz PMD-671 comes out I'm probably going to buy it, so I'd like the bag to accommodate that as well - it's about the size of a DAP-1.

So any advice?

Well.....I use a completely different rig...but, all in all it comes to about the same bulk...a little more here...a little less there. I ordered a Nova 3 that is supposed to be here tommorow. I'll let you know if it's enough for me. I'm sure in the meantime though, there are plenty of folks here that could give you an answer on that. Go to the website for Lowepro and check dimensions...make a drawing with those dimensions and measure your equipment....get a rough idea if it will work or not. That's what I did. Hope I was right.

Yeah I don't really have a ruler or anything like that to measure it out. ;)  And the measurements for the Nova 5 seemed a lot smaller than I remember the bag in person...

Yeah...I hear ya.....well, like I said...I'm sure someone else will come around who can better answer that question for you without you have to measure anything. Good luck.

Thanks and + to ya.  Any way you'll be taking pictures of the 3 when you get it?

john, hit your local photo shop with all your gear and see what bag it fits into.  when you decide to buy, goto photococan on ebay

Sure thing....I'll post pics of the bag packed. Don't have any pics of my rig up anyway, so I'll make a point to do it as soon as I can.

Are the Lowepro Nova's usually carried at photo stores?  I guess the next thing to do is find a local photo store ;)

Hi,
I recently purchased a lowepro magnum and I am very pleased with it.
I think the nova 5 is similar to this bag or maybe it is the replacement model for it.
I think the magnum is no longer made...
Regardless I love this bag, I fit all my gear into it and I could probably get
a few more things in it.
I get some time tonight I will take some pictures and post them.
I have pretty much the same set up as you.
Jb3, V3, mics, shockmounts, 2 wallyworld batts. clamps, 15' cables etc..
I recommend it FWIW...
the feet on the bottom keeps the bag off the beer soaked floor and their
is a plastic weather pouch that hides away in the back pocket for foul weather
or obnoxious beer throwers.

I own both the Nova 4 and Nova 5.    The Nova 5 is ia pretty big bag and easily fits all my stuff into it and sure it would for you too.    May be able to squeeze that stuff into a Nova 4, I just carry around so much crap with me I upgraded to the 5.   A Nova 3 would be too small I am pretty sure.    So anyways, I narrowed it down to a 4 or a 5 for you ;)
